Historical Romance: River of Stone by Kathleen Hope

In 1885, Rose Victoria Fields lives with her parents and four sisters on Thunder Ranch in the Arizona Territory, right outside the gates of Fort Huachuca - the regimental headquarters of the U.S. Army Fourth Cavalry.

Unlike her four sisters, who think nothing of dressing in boys' clothes while riding and working on their father's horse ranch and are known to everyone for their wild ways, Rose Victoria attempts to always present herself as a perfect lady known for her feminine graces.

It's become Rose's goal in life to become the wife of a U.S. Army officer where, she feels, her manners and her love of volunteering and service will be of good use.

But her plan begins to come crashing down when she and her sister Lavender are helped in a desert thunderstorm by Stephen Bell, a handsome man with the manners and speech of a gentleman. She believes he must be an officer and is certain he would be an ideal man for her - until she learns that he is nothing of the kind, and indeed is only a newly enlisted private.

Rose will have to decide whether to take a chance on this good man, and becomes determined to learn the mystery of his background.

The story was over before it got started. Interesting characters and location but not sufficiently developed. I would love to have found out how Victoria reconciled her desire to marry an officer with her discoveries about Pvt Bell. Instead he explains his situation and assumes she will be fine with changing her expectations and it ends !

What a delightful romance.. Rose the educated daughter of a retired Army officer who owned a horse ranch which raised horses for the army. Rose unlike her sisters who wore pants and rode horses and helped run the ranching part of the ranch, felt she must be more refined dress like a lady in dresses... She desires to marry an officer, but when her sister Lavender and she are rescued by some army soldiers after an accident while driving home from town, she is drawn to one of them who behaves like he should be an officer.. latter she finds out that he is but a lowly private and is torn by her attraction to him and whom she feels she should marry... Will events in their lives draw them together or will Rose be able to give up her dream of marring an officer and give a lowly army private who has secrets of his own a chance to win her heart...
