About the Author

Kathryn M. Tschiegg was born to Robert E. Tschiegg and Mary Jean Weeman on April 30, 1956. She graduated from Orrville High School in 1974. She completed her nursing degree in 1978. Kathy joined the Peace Corps as a Registered Nurse. After witnessing two years of preventable deaths, Kathy returned to the U.S. for the following fifteen years. She worked as an Emergency Room and Surgical Intensive Care Unit nurse at Aultman Hospital. During that time, she was recognized as Employee of the Year and received the Outstanding Alumni Award. But the memories of Honduras continued to follow her, and she became determined to develop a system that would deliver sustainable quality care to the poor of Central America. She returned to college for her business degree, and upon graduation, she founded Central American Medical Outreach, Inc. (CAMO USA) and incorporated it as a 501(c)3 in May 1993. With her goal of bringing health care to the poor, CAMO's Counterpart Model has become a template for successful aid work in western Honduras. She has been recognized by many for her life's work.Awards / Community ServiceProclamations in recognition of 30 years of service given on November 16, 2023, by:President Iris Xiomara Castro Sarmiento President of HondurasGovernor Mike DeWine and Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted, of OhioMayor Robert F. Preface

Chapter One: Thousands of Milles from Home...The Day of Realization... "A war was raging inside me at the same time the actual wars were raging in El Salvador and Nicaragua. My war felt unbearable. It challenged the core of my beliefs. God had abandoned this baby, this mother, this country."

Chapter Two: Go Play. Tomorrow Will Be Better... "No, Mom! Don't make me go to school!"

Chapter Three: Please God, Not Here... "During one of these early afternoons in July of 1979, when I was getting ready for work, I heard a TV commercial that would change my life.

Chapter Four: Give Me Strength to Stay Another Day... "The first week, I would recoil and swat the bug off me in a panic. As time passed, I no longer responded with horror. I became used to encountering vermin of every kind, roaches especially."

Chapter Five: The Place Where You Come to Die " "Whom to choose? Who would live? I had to decide."

Chapter Six: The Kindness of Strangers... "Soon, my story spread around the plane. I was the young woman coming home from the Peace Corps with her guard dog."

Chapter Seven: Working to Forget... "What I had seen and experienced in Honduras was more than any twenty-five-year-old should. I was committed to moving on with my life."

Chapter Eight: The Dream

Chapter Nine: If Not I, Then Who, Lord?... "Much, much worse. As I opened the doors, the smell of deterioration and decay hit my nostrils. Vultures swooped into the yard, and dogs ran down the halls."

Chapter Ten: The Early Years..."You see, God is crying tears of joy because you have returned to help us."

Chapter Eleven: Tragedy and Miracles..." People pushed back continually, wanting us to convert to the status quo.

Chapter Twelve: Hurricane Mitch... "The downpour was relentless."

Chapter Thirteen: Building Infrastructure..."Each one of us is given different callings and talents, all of us having a purpose."

Chapter Fourteen: Community Building..."This kind of partnership was exactly what our latest five-year plan outlined for community development".

Chapter Fifteen: A Wake-Up Call... "I scheduled you for surgery tomorrow. I believe it's ovarian cancer, and we need to do an exploratory surgery."

Chapter Sixteen: Sustaining the Vision..."One of the buzzwords in the nonprofit world is sustainability."

Chapter Seventeen: Saving Carmen and a Hospital... "Do you think this would be too graphic to show the congregation?"

Chapter Eighteen: A Shelter for Women and Personal Losses... "I need you to do one more thing for me."

Chapter Nineteen: Blow Away the Chaff, Keep the Grain... "The false propaganda started in a very public and ugly way."

Chapter Twenty: Coup d'état

Chapter Twenty-one: Building for the Future..."The current robust financial health of CAMO is a result of the gradual success of a strategy implemented in 2008."

Chapter Twenty-two: Covid and Other Challenges..."If you don't get them out today, they will need to be evacuated,"

Chapter Twenty-three: CAMO Model is Validated... "Everything we have accomplished came from persistent faith.
