Reviewed by Karen Pirnot for Readers Favorite Horace Helfin's "Horrifying Halloween" is John McCarthy's second book in the 'Horace Helfin series'. Horace Helfin is a magical elf who comes to little Sally Connors and her friends in times of need. Together they fight any evil which comes to their community of Somertown. More than likely, the evil will present in the form of the wicked Goblin King and his pet cat Miss Mephisto. Sally and her friends get together in their Halloween costumes to plan a party for the school. They get very little done when an occurrence at the local candy factory puts things on hold. A mysterious black cloud seems to immobilize all the adults and it allows the Goblin King to control the adults. They all help make chocolate which is intended to turn consumers into zombies. Fortunately, the children catch on just in time and it is up to them to set things right in Somertown. This is a book filled with images which will surely capture the imagination of most preteen children. There is action galore as the gang fends off an army of gargoyles and then takes on the Goblin King himself. I did think the episodes of fighting off the gargoyles was a bit prolonged but for most children, it will ease them into the action and they can ride right along in the adventure. The book teases the senses of sound, sight, smell and touch and as such, it is rich with fuel for the creative soul.
