In this small-format book, which follows I Love Christmas (2009), Ollie, a zebra who resembles a homemade stuffed animal, shares the details of what he and his mother do together (“We love to play with the butterflies./ We love to hide in disguise”) and why he loves her. After a day's worth of gentle adventures, they rest and Ollie's mom gives him a “special treat.” But it's the kiss good night that Ollie loves best. PreS-K—Ollie the cartoon zebra from I Love Christmas (HarperCollins, 2009) returns to chronicle in rhyme activities shared with each parent. With Dad, Ollie bakes banana bread, rides a bike, climbs a tree, and paints a fence. Ollie and Mom walk through a park and use their imaginations, then return home for a treat and bath. Bedtime is the favorite because with Dad, Ollie gets a piggyback ride, and Mom provides a goodnight kiss. In both stories, the family dog tags along for the fun. Delicate color illustrations rendered in ink sit on white backgrounds to showcase simple scenes with bright butterflies or playground equipment that nicely contrast with the gray-and-white-striped characters. Ollie B., a grayandwhite striped creature with long ears and floppy legs, tells readers just how he and his mom spend time together. "We look / and talk, / we giggle / and walk. // We see a duck and a dragonfly. // We see orange fish swimming by." The utter simplicity of the text suits this small celebration to the youngest listeners, but there is some sweet sophistication in the illustrations. The aforementioned duck is a topiary waterfowl; the orange of the fish swimming by is echoed in Mom's polkadot bag and the curves of their smiles. It's an undemanding little gift book that speaks simply. A companion, I Love My Dad (9781416983194; April 2010), treats Ollie's relationship with his dad with a similarly light touch.
