I have been looking forward to getting my greedy little hands on this book for a long time! All I can say is it was definitely worth the wait! From the very first words out of Ava's mouth I knew I was going to like her, she had my own sarcastic sense of humour and I loved that. Ava is returning home from Singapore after being ceremoniously dumped by her boyfriend of four years, if that wasn't heartbreaking enough for poor Ava, Harper the douche decided the best place to crush Ava's world would be in a karaoke bar of all places! So just like that, as if the last four years didn't matter, like it was no big deal that Ava gave up her dreams to move to Singapore to be with Harper it was all over and Ava found herself on a plane home alone with a shattered heart. Ava knows she needs time to heal, she also needs to find the person she once was without Harper and above all Ava has to decide if she wants to again pursue her culinary dreams she gave up to follow Harper. But lucky for Ava she isn't alone, she has her BFF Veronica or V as she is known. And with V around sulking, dwelling or dull moments were prohibited! I loved V straight away, she really was the perfect best friend! She was so protective of Ava and fiercely loyal yet she meddled when it was definitely called for. Ava has been on American soil less than 24hrs when she is introduced to Jasper. Well if you can call stumbling, staring and blushing as an introduction then that's what it was! Jasper is friends with V's boyfriend Lucas who is also in a band with Jasper, yes that's right Jasper is a heart throb musician but don't swoon yet because then we find out that dark haired, blue eyed and ruggedly handsome Jasper also works at an animal shelter! Okay now you can let the swooning commence. From their very first meeting it was clear Jasper and Ava shared a connection. But building sexual tension aside Ava knew she wasn't ready to dive into another relationship and the appearance of blonde Barbie Indie who is described as Jasper's "on and off" girlfriend complicates matters. So Ava and Jasper decide to be friends while Ava gets her life back on track. Even though I was desperate for Ava and Jasper to get together, I'm really glad they went down the friends route first. It enabled them to build a foundation and also it allowed me as a reader to believe in their relationship as you will know by now how I feel about 'instalove'. When they finally did give in to their feelings I may have done a little fist pump! The chemistry was crackling and the smexy times did not disappoint ;). Jasper is not only a beautiful musician but he also carries a heavy heart as he has lived through a very tough past and still has some family heartache to deal with. But as you know the course of true love never runs smooth and Jasper has to take a trip back home leaving Ava with some decisions of her own to make. Now as much as I loved Ava I couldn't help but shake my head at what she had decided. I know she was guarded and she had every right to be cautious with her heart but I did wish she would let go. Jasper was opening his heart and letting her in for the first time but Ava was always holding a part of herself back. There was a lot of back and forth and I found myself starting to get antsy, I just really wanted Ava to open up to Jasper and admit her true feelings. Then we have the case of the 'exes' Indie wasn't going to bow out quietly as she made very clear that Jasper was hers and then there was Harper the douche who I wish would have disappeared for good but Ava wanted closure. Now the ending had me tearing up slightly. It also made me love Jasper even more, it's not a cliffhanger per se but Jasper and Ava's story is definitely not over. I do worry about the decision Ava made and the situation she is going to put herself in. I just wanted to scoop Ava and Jasper up and keep them from harm but Ava wanted to go back to school and follow her dream. This was a great debut from Monica James, I loved her writing style, it flowed well and I was truly engrossed in the story. The characterisation was great, I loved each and every character (even the ones I loved to hate ;)) There were plenty of laugh out loud moments, as well as want to throw my iPad moments and of course the tear jerking moments too which to me is the the elements of a great story. If you are looking for a new book boyfriend, a sassy chick with a great BFF with a backdrop of drama, angst and sexiness thrown in then you must try I Surrender today! My favourite quotes: "I was wishing I was a bird....I just want to fly away when things get tough." ~Ava "I promise I'll be here waiting to catch you when you're ready to land." ~Jasper *I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*
I love I Surrender and highly recommend it. If you don't know who Jasper White is then you need to read and find out who he is. He swept me off my feet and I don't want him to ever put me down, he is now my #1 book boyfriend. I want my own rock god but until then I will dream about Jasper White. Why are you not reading about Jasper? Go buy the book and read it, go on, you won't be sorry.
I enjoyed the story concept of the book, but one time Ava had a fringe, the next time bangs. One time they were in a lift, other times in an elevator? Just a couple of examples. A little more proof reading of the book would be nice - I do like consistency. I'm sure it's not easy using American terms, but it helps if you are going to have the characters born in America. Looking forward to the final book of the trilogy.
This girl is such a memlodramatic cry baby! Ibwanted to slap her! I literally forced myself tjrough this book. If wimpy, weak, selfish, wallowing in pity heroines are your thing, then this book is for you.
