Quest'opera è la più estesa biografia di san Josemaría Escrivá (1902-1975), elaborata anche sul materiale della causa di canonizzazione, avvenuta in Piazza S. Pietro a Roma il 6 ottobre 2002. Un particolare interesse rivestono le numerose citazioni dagli "Appunti intimi", una sorta di diario interiore che Josemaría Escrivá tenne a partire dall'inizio degli anni '30 del XX secolo. Questo primo volume prende in esame la vita di Escrivá dal 1902 al 1936.
