Although the McGee novels are what MacDonald is best known for, his stories from the '50s represent probably his best work. "In a Small Motel" is a very good example of that writing. This story of menace, greed, and love was published in the July 1955 issue of "Justice", a short-lived magazine of "amazing detective mysteries."
