Ms. Wall's debut novel is a pleasant surprise. Rich in detail and densely plotted, her first foray into the mystery genre is a promising one. An appealing female protagonist, colorful supporting characters, and a keen sense of place help make 'In For a Penny' an engrossing, satisfying read. Her deft prose moves the story along at a brisk pace and at the same time is able to evoke the charm and mystery of the Lowcountry. Several indicators suggest this is the first of a series. Here's hoping that the lovely Bay Tanner can happen upon further intrigues in the not-too-distant future.

Kathryn Wall's first book in the Bay Tanner mystery series.I recently got to meet Kathryn Wall personally and she is very funny and down to earth. In For A Penny setting is in the South Carolina lowcountry. The main character is Bay Tanner a recent widow of a husband that was murdered. As the synopsis reads above someone is making a killing in real estate, this is how her life of grieving and solitude gets interrupted. She is asked by her Father Judge Talbot and long time friend of her mother's Miss Hammond to look into a financial adventure they invested in that looks a little shady. As she is researching the investment a body is found dead, the wrong people are being accused and she is almost killed a few times.I was pleasantly surprised how intriguing and suspenseful her first book was her characters all had their own identities and it was easy to love some and hate some others. How the story flowed was great also. I liked this book so much I have already started on her second book, Not A Penny More.

I read mostly mysteries and did enjoy this first novel by Kathryn Wall very much. The setting was very reminiscent of the South I've visited and so I was able to visualize many of the locations. I loved the characters and look forward to reading more of her books. This one was recommended by a friend who knows the author and I'm so glad I took her advice.

I began this series in the middle in that, at the time that I started, the first book, self published, was not widely available. I am a fan of the series. Interesting characters. Great read for those familiar with Hilton Head. In this opening book, Bay Tanner (the protagonist) is the her sassy self. Very interesting character. Overall, a good book, but a bit flawed. There were a few lapses where an editor was needed, sometimes motivations were weak or poorly developed (especially for Bay Tanner's father), and I did get tired of Bay reaching for a cigarette. Despite these weaknesses, well worth reading.
