The main characters are Peter, an American WWII veteran who has become a war correspondent for United Press and Yvonne, a Chinese doctor who works at a French Military Hospital in Hanoi. They meet in the rainy season of 1950, during the First Indochina War (France vs Vietminh). It ends in 1956, 2 years after the Geneva Accords, and then there are two isolated events in 1960 and 1961.
