Juliette and the Monday ManDates (The Gustafson Girls, #1) by Becky Doughty

One brokenhearted girl, three meddling sisters, and an intervention plan called The Monday ManDates....

Juliette is heart-broken after waiting in vain almost ten years for a proposal from her boyfriend. Determined she isn’t “getting over Mike” quickly enough, her three sisters devise The Monday ManDates; an intervention plan requiring Juliette to endure what turns out to be a series of remarkably disastrous blind dates: TheraPaul, Frisky Frank, TAZ the rock star, and the stoic Tim Larsen, among others. Then there’s Victor Jarrett, the police officer with an affinity for pulling Juliette over when she’s at her very worst. But no one is more surprised than Juliette when she meets the one man who can right the wrongs in her past and change her future, if she will only let herself fall in love with him.

When Paul and Simone Gustafson are killed by a drunk driver, the lives of their daughters change irrevocably. Although raised by loving grandparents, it’s the G-FOURce—the Gustafson Four Sisters Club—that binds them together when their differences would tear them apart. All grown up now, Juliette has become the quintessential doormat, Renata, the self-appointed matriarchal figure. Phoebe is, at least according to Renata, borderline narcissistic, and Gia is on the verge of a major identity crisis.

Then there’s Angela Clinton, the senior class darling who drove her cherry black 1970 el Camino into the side of their parents’ car on the night of Juliette’s high school graduation. Angela’s prison sentence is winding down; soon she’ll be eligible for parole and moving back to town. Will the G-FOURce be strong enough to hold them together as they step into the eye of the storm that’s been brewing for the last fifteen years? Will they finally be able to let go of the past and embrace the future, no matter what it holds?

Note: The Gustafson Girls series is Christian Women's Fiction with strong elements of Romance.

The author has taken some very common elements of the Christian romance novel and written a fresh and enjoyable story. There are artfully utilized references to fantasy, Austen, Peter Pan, and modern culture that make this more than a generic romance. I am looking forward to rain more from this author!

A cute quirky story about sisters setting up blind dates Juliette. But above all she needs to learn to let God have control. In a round about way they assist her finding someone or at least learning to let someone close enough.

This is the first book written by Becky Doughty that I read and I absolutely LOVED it!!! It showed up in my Book Bub email while I was on vacation in Dallas so I downloaded it (it was FREE so why not?) then read it straight through on the drive home (no, I was not driving...). It was sooooo entertaining how her sisters set her up with Monday night dates yet she met her intended on her own! What fun!!! Of course, I've since read the remaining two books in the series and can't wait for the 4th book! This is a must read!!!

Not only a really fun book, but it was well written with lots of character development. More than your average Christian romance.

Becky Doughty has written a good novel and very clearly shows the God who loves us very much. Her portrayal of Trevor as a man who loves God and sees His presence in all creation. Juliette's character arc was well done as she goes from angry to forgiving. Victor is well drawn in his conflicting feelings. Then there's Tootle/Bob. Any story that includes a rescue dog is good. There were some things I felt would have made the writing stronger. There were too many overlong sentences and descriptions. The nickname "JuJu" sounded too immature for a thirty-three year old woman. Since Victor used his middle name his business card should probably read "J. Victor" rather than "James V." All small things when the redemptive story was so well written. I hope this reaches many and " makes God proud".

This story has an interesting plot to it that seems to weaved through the whole series with many sub plots to boot. I love how the author has painted the characters in this book. I look forward to getting know more about the other sisters in the following sequels to this wonderful, bantering love story of Juliette and her police officer.

Reviewed by Java Davis for Readers' Favorite Juliette and the Monday ManDates by Becky Doughty is the first in a series of books about the four Gustafson Girls: Juliette, the oldest and this book's main character, Renata, Phoebe, and Gia, known to one another as the G-FOURce. The background set up is that fifteen years earlier, their parents were killed in an auto accident caused by one of Juliette's classmates who was drinking and driving. Angela has served the past fifteen years in prison, and she is being released soon. Juliette has just broken up with a ten-year boyfriend, and is floundering with what to do next with her life. Her sisters set her up on a series of Monday evening dates in the hopes of finding her a new love interest. But instead of one of these potential suitors, Juliette meets an attractive police officer, and the sparks ignite. More interesting to me were the relationships between all four sisters, the adoption of a stray dog, and the nosy old bat next door who becomes a good friend. Even more interesting than these was Juliette's discovery of Christian faith, her interest in Bible study, and her pleasure in going to church. This last theme was pure, shared with her best friends, her sister Gia, and her two Angelas, one being the former "old bat next door" and the Angela who will be getting out of jail shortly. This book ultimately doesn't stand alone. It ends suddenly, with many threads still hanging. Would I read the next book in the series, though? I would.
