A brave book that flows with equal parts tenderness and power. A story about a black and white teen who brave intense relationships with their mothers amid the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Hear in the news about the refugees in the New Orleans Superdome, the thousands trapped in their attics as the flood waters rose up to their roof lines, the heartbreaking closing of the Gretna Bridge? Landfall puts you there. It does not shy away. All this and one of the most surprising endings in recent memory. Some of the dialogue got a little expository in the last third of the novel, but with the many twists and turns, the chapters alternating between the black and white characters, it is all more than intense. An easy book to champion, an impossible book to forget.
