Las Vegas Sidewinders: Brock (Book 8) by Kat Mizera

Brock Lassiter has it all: good looks, good health, and the best job in the world. As a defenseman for the Las Vegas Sidewinders hockey team, he's the luckiest bastard on earth. If only he could stop getting in trouble. One more screw-up and the team won't renew his contract. He needs to clean up his act, but he's not interested in a ball and chain--even if it comes in the form of the woman he's been fantasizing about for years.

Hollywood starlet Ashleigh Hunter is living the dream with a role on one of the hottest shows on television. Her life would be complete if only she could adopt the sweet orphan girl she's fallen in love with, but a single 25-year-old woman who spends the majority of her time in the spotlight may not be able to get custody.

When Brock and Ashleigh find themselves accidentally married, they balk. There's no denying the chemistry between them, but a marriage of convenience? Who does that anymore? Apparently, they do--and it's not what either of them are expecting.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. This is my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. There are 5 other books in this series  but their descriptions were not the types of books I like but this one sounded really good. Fake marriage, Las Vegas, hockey player and actress and a kid. So I really wanted to read it. I am happy to say I really LOVED it! This is the story about Ashleigh, an actress in Hollywood who is popular, I would say a B level actress. She has a supporting character role on a TV Vampire show. Growing up she was very poor and she ended up homeless so she really believes in giving back. While helping in a shelter, she met a little girl Belle, and fell in love and took the little girl home. But Belle, has a sister who doesn't want to let go, even though her life is dangerous and so Ashleigh is fighting to adopt Belle with the sister, Meanwhile Ashleigh's best friend is Rachel who is dating a hockey player who lives and works in Vegas. She drives to Vegas a lot and she talks Ashleigh into taking a break and joining her one weekend and that is how she meets Brock. Brock and Ashleigh have a few dates and on the second one end up drunk and VERY married. But they really like each other and he wants to help her out with Belle so they decide to stay married, even as they live in different places and have very different and intense careers. This is their story of being there for each other and falling in love with the other. It was a fun story, with lots of romance and flirtiness. There is no bad guys or characters. The biggest issues Ashleigh and Brock have are time and distance and making things work while dealing with each others insecurities and getting to know each other

I love hockey players and I loved this book. I have read other Sidewinder books and this one is one of the best. I loved Brock and Ashleigh's story. This couple really needed each other, not for the reasons they think but because they each others other half. Great characters with a great story and there is actual hockey being played.

This was such a great story! Brock & Ashleigh were such an adorable couple. There were so many emotions, twists and turn, it made for a great story! Brock and Ashleigh had such great chemistry, just from the moment they locked eyes. I think this helped so much with being married while drunk. But, because they drunk married, they had so many different trust and relationship issues to get over. Those two things really made me want to strangle these two a few times, they kept things in and didn’t talk about it. Brock was amazing though with Ashleighs intimacy issues, he was sooo sweet and attentive Then we have sweet Bella. She was the cutest darn little girl EVER! Her reaction to Brock and his mother are so sweet! The fact that Brock stepped right up the plate with her was so heartfelt (and panty melting). Despite the issues they had together, the issues with Bella’s sister, they really did well together. There were some major twists and turns, but I absolutely love how this book ended. I can’t wait to go back and read the rest of the series!

This story, like all the other Las Vegas Sidewinders stories, is so good and just sucks you in from page 1. Brock is just a sweetheart, even when he doesn't think he is. He definitely is a heart warmer, for sure! And Ashleigh taps into the insecurities that I think everyone has had at one time or another. Yes she's on TV but she has a horrible self-esteem in herself, both in personality, physicality and sexuality. Ashleigh is a single, 25-year old TV star (think maybe C list) who is trying to adopt an 8-year old girl that she became acquainted with while volunteering for a homeless shelter. The only hitch? The older sister who doesn't want Ashleigh to take away her sister - for a myriad of reasons. Brock is not lacking for companionship but he only wants one night stands; he won't do a relationship anymore. He meets Ashleigh and is very interested in her. Especially when he hears about the circumstances in Ashleigh's life. Brock and Ashleigh work somehow even with their different professions, different cities but they are magic together.

Kat Mizera scores with BROCK, the seventh book in the Las Vegas Sidewinders series. NHL defenseman Brock Lassiter and actress Ashleigh Hunter did not remember getting married on their date. However, the situation could work in both their favor. This contemporary sports romance is suitable for adult audience. Kat Mizera does a great job with her character development and plot. Ashleigh is a noble character. I like that she wants to adopt Bella Reardon. She doesn’t fit the stereotype of Hollywood starlet. Brock is a good guy who always seems to get in trouble. He has no interest in relationships after having his heart broken by the only woman he ever loved. The couple has a lot in common, like being raised by their single mothers. They have amazing chemistry. The plot was believable and heartfelt. The couple face numerous obstacles, including working in different states and wanting to adopt Bella. The story was well-written and interesting for start to finish. The ending was well concluded. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

What would you do for love? Love of sport and a connection of the heart are key factors that Ms. Mizera takes on in her latest Sidewinders. Intense emotion leads to heartwarming moments and humorous antics for the actress and the hockey star. Love brings them together, but not for each other. Hockey is Brock's mistress of choice. The adrenaline rush, adoring fans and bad choices feed his ego and land him on the brink of losing it all. Ashleigh is a woman in the spotlight. Her dream has always been to be a star. Now that she's accomplished her career aspirations, she longs for more. A life beyond the bright lights and big dreams. Family. Her heart belongs to a little girl that she longs to make her own, but life in the headlines is making that an impossible acquisition. What she needs is a miracle, what she gets is anything but. Brock is full of precious moments. Whether crying from gut wrenching laughter or anxiously awaiting happily ever after, Kat Mizera keeps a tight reign on a heart.
