LENA RIVERS is the fourth book and third novel by Victorian romance writer Mary Jane Holmes. The novel follows the life of the orphaned girl 'Lena Rivers, whose life mirrors in aspects that of the author. Born to an impoverished family in Massachusetts, 'Lena moves to antebellum Kentucky where she lives with a milquetoast uncle, his overbearing wife, and their snotty children. 'Lena must overcome her background and upbringing to find happiness and success.

About the Author

Mary Jane Holmes (1825-1907) was a popular American writer of romance novels. Born in Massachusetts, Holmes published her first novel (TEMPEST AND SUNSHINE) at age 29 after a brief time living in Kentucky. She and her husband, an attorney, eventually settled in Brockport, New York, where she wrote nearly forty novels. While her first book was the most successful, Holmes produced a steady stream of popular books which made her the second best selling American writer of the 19th century, second only to Harriet Beecher Stowe.
