Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite Lightning Bug Lantern is an adventure storybook for children written by Andrea Skuta and illustrated by Julie Wells. Maggie loved the summer vacations which she spent with her grandmother. They stayed in the little trailer by the lake, and every day was filled with adventure and fun. She particularly looked forward to that time of the day when the sun had set and darkness was just drawing in. If she focused and watched carefully, she could spot the first lightning bugs as they began to shine brightly in the dark. Maggie loved catching lightning bugs, and she and her grandmother worked hard to catch enough to fill Maggie’s jar. A full jar, Grandma, had told Maggie, would become a lightning bug lantern, a magical and light-filled addition to their campsite. Each night they tried, but they never seemed able to get enough fireflies to make that lantern. Maggie began to fret and wonder if they would ever succeed, but Grandma knew they’d be able to do it. Andrea Skuta’s Lightning Bug Lantern is a captivating look at one of the high points of summer -- the magical appearance of lightning bugs at dusk. She adroitly pairs it with the perfect partnership of a young girl and her grandmother. Julie Wells’ illustrations are enchanting, each panel working perfectly with the story line. I loved seeing Maggie and Grandma catch-and-release fish and enjoy the sand and water at the beach. And those nights they spend surrounded by stars and the glow of the lightning bugs! Lightning Bug Lantern is an awesome summer read that will have readers dreaming of their own lighting bug lanterns and summer vacations by the lake. A grand selection for story time, this book is also an excellent primer for new readers to try on their own. Lightning Bug Lantern is most highly recommended.
