CHAPTER 1

"Mum-eee, Mum-Mum-Mum, Ma-ma," cried the three little devils as they rushed up to their mother.

Lucky Devil stared at Nipper, Growler, and Tugger. Someone was missing!

"Where is Splasher?" she asked with a gasp.

"We don't know," they cried.

"We were playing hide-and-seek, and Splasher ran off to hide, and then she just disappeared," Growler sobbed.

"I need to get Kookie Kookaburra to help," Lucky said, and then she let loose, with a loud, horrible, devilish howl.

Kookie swooped down beside Lucky with an earsplitting cackle. "Now tell me, please, when did you last see your sister?" she asked the three little devils.

"When we were playing on the track," they called out in unison.

"And what is special about Splasher?"

"She has a lovely, big, white eye patch," Tugger said, pointing to his left eye.

"She can run really fast," Growler added.

"And she likes to splash in puddles, a lot," Nipper chuckled.

"Thank you very much. I'll see to this right away," Kookie said, with a muffled cackle, as she flew off into the treetops.

"Oh-oh-oh-oh, awh-awh-awh-awwwh-help!" she called out from overhead.

Soon, a crowd of eager helpers came running into the forest clearing.

Kookie perched on an old tree stump and counted them one by one:Spottie Quoll, Edna Echidna, Bushy Wallaby, Platypus Jack, Pinky Potoroo, Frisky Lizard, Scooper Wombat, Scratcher and Digger Bandicoot, and last of all, Pozz Possum.

Ten should about do, Kookie thought, and clicked her beak. "Thank you all for coming to search for little Splasher Devil, who went missing while playing hide-and-seek. So, no time to waste. Ears up and eyes down — and off you go."

Platypus Jack hurried down to his favorite creek, where there were lots of big, shiny puddles to search and some nice, fat worms to find as well.

Scooper Wombat was certain he knew exactly where Splasher was hiding. He dawdled along, munching on some juicy green shoots on the way to his burrow, but when he arrived, he found, no one at all.

Spottie, Frisky, and Pinky peered into every hollow log with high hopes and were surprised to find Bluey and Barney, Frisky's very sleepy cousins.

Scratcher and Digger Bandicoot scuttled around in the button-grass swamp and dug up a patch of fat, yummy corbie grubs.

Edna Echidna searched inside an old, rotting tree stump and found a tasty nest of ants.

Meanwhile, Bushy Wallaby bounded off along the track and soon disappeared into the bushes.

Pozz Possum rushed from one place to another until she was in a dizzy spin. She stopped beside her favorite tree and shakily climbed up to a forked branch. And then she saw it - an empty space, where a tree had fallen against a big, old tree stump.

Pozz arrived at the spot just as Bushy burst through the bushes. Together, they pulled back the branches and peered underneath.

"We've found her! We've found Splasher!" they yelled to the treetops.
