About the Author

Matt Cosgrove, lover of words, pictures and books in general, is the author and illustrator of the Macca the Alpaca series and many other books in Australia, including My Dad Is a Robot, Thanks, Mum!, and the Epic Fail Tales series. In a varied career spanning over 25 years, Matt has been the creative director of a magazine and a lecturer in comic art at Western Sydney University, and worked in television. The title character, who stars in a picture book series in Cosgrove’s native Australia, makes his U.S. debut in which an easygoing young alpaca faces off against a large, mean-spirited llama. In breezy rhymed couplets and telling pictures, the author captures the happy-go-lucky personality of Macca, who “loves splashing in puddles and gives the best cuddles” (the latter demonstrated by images of the smiling creature zealously hugging various animals). The peace is shattered by the arrival of the llama, whose character Cosgrove unambiguously elucidates as the sneering intruder kicks Macca off the page: “That guy is called Harmer. (He’s no charmer.) He’s tall, strong, and woolly, but also a... …bully!” When Harmer challenges the much smaller alpaca to a contest of strength, Macca cunningly turns it into a battle of wits and agility, which he, inevitably yet comedically handily, wins. Featuring clean lines, vibrant colors, and the protagonists’ dramatically distinct facial expressions, Cosgrove’s art drives home the unmistakable message of this snappy readaloud: hugs, not shoves. Macca, an uber-cuddly alpaca, lives a carefree life until he crosses paths with a llama bully.

The llama, not-so-subtly named Harmer, is downright awful. He kicks, yells, taunts, and steals in a single page of illustration. An allegorical story ensues in which Macca and Harmer face off in what turns out to be a battle of wits. With each challenge presented, Macca bests Harmer not through brute strength but through the clever use of a tool. At the final challenge, racing up a mountain, Macca's lithe physicality proves an asset, as his nimble body easily navigates the rocks. There is much in this book that readers will surely enjoy. The illustrations are emotive and humorous. The rhyming text is enjoyable to read aloud. It is an anti-bullying tale with a satisfying comeuppance. The presentation of Macca as totally good and Harmer as totally bad, however, feels like a missed opportunity, as the lack of nuance renders the narrative patently pedantic. There is also a cringeworthy use of the term "karma" that appears when the llama bully plummets down the mountain. The inaccurate application of a spiritually significant term to imply that bad actors get what is coming to them simply because it rhymes conveniently with "llama" is dismissive and borderline offensive to adherents of Hinduism and Buddhism.

This moralizing modern fable favoring brains over brawn missteps. (Picture book. 4-8)
