About the Author

Deepak Cyril D'Souza is Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine and a staff psychiatrist at VA Connecticut Healthcare System (VACHS), Connecticut.

David Castle is Scientific Director of the Centre for Complex Interventions at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at The University of Toronto, Canada.

Sir Robin Murray is Professor of Psychiatric Research at the Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) and at King's College London (KCL), and a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Description: This third edition book provides vital updates on the established connection between marijuana and mental illnesses, with a particular focus on psychotic disorders.
Purpose: With the increased availability and use of marijuana, it is vital that mental health providers engage with their patients on this topic. The authors appropriately understand the importance of presenting up-to-date, research-based information on how marijuana impacts different mental illnesses and review other pertinent topics.
Audience: According to the authors, the book is "an essential resource for all members of the mental health team." While anyone providing mental health care will benefit from the book, given the technicality of the presented information, providers with a background in physiology who have cared for individuals using cannabis will most benefit. The authors are credible authorities, given their long history of interest in cannabis and the team of contributors they have assembled to produce this book.
Features: This book is divided into eight sections. The first section reviews the physiology of cannabis. The second section reviews changes of cannabis over the years. Part 3 examines the impact of cannabis use on the brain. Part 4 reviews the relationship between cannabis and mood symptoms. Sections 5-7 review the impact of cannabis and psychotic disorders including treatment, course, and specific symptoms. The final section reviews helpful "special topics," including violence, addiction, sleep, and withdrawal. Each chapter includes black-and-white graphics to assist in the comprehension of the presented information with a color copy of each graphic located in the middle of the text. The chapters end with a helpful summary and references. An index concludes the book.
Assessment: This book clearly presents updated information on cannabis and its impact on mental illness, with a specific focus on psychotic disorders. The authors do not display observable biases and appropriately identify where supplementary data is needed for more definitive answers. This book will be best used as a reference, as the chapters include repetitive information. I have already used the information I gleaned from this book with patients and foresee myself using this as a reference until the fourth edition is published. Comparable books about marijuana include Marijuana: The Unbiased Truth about the World's Most Popular Weed, Hill (Hazelden, 2015) and Marijuana on My Mind, Cermak (Cambridge University Press, 2022). While these texts are helpful, the former needs to be updated given the new research findings, and the latter is not as scientifically rigorous, nor does it cover the broad topics of marijuana and madness.
