This had the potential to become a great story but there was no depth to the characters. Piper character was charming but what happened to Jodie? I paid 99 cents, which is what it was worth. Don’t recommend following series.

Mikhail Barinov, a dragon shifter, was imprisoned by Queen Elizabeth I, whom he had thought was his fated mate. After his release upon the Queen’s death, he has been living in a cottage on the Cornwall coast since then. He was reminiscing in front of the television when he sees a newsflash: the Victoria and Albert Museum in London has his jewels, the ones Elizabeth stole from him, and they are to be auctioned by the Thorne Auction House; he must get them back. He was exiled from his home in Russia by his father because he had failed his mission, and he will not get sidetracked this time. Piper Linwood, a gemologist, is a consultant for the Thorne Auction House with her friend Jodie Harkness. Jodie has encouraged Piper to get rid of her pesky V-card, and when Piper sees Mikhail, she gathers he just might be the one to do the deed. Mikhail has arranged to have an invitation to the Museum and secure his precious jewels; his English dragon friend Randolph Belishaw made it possible. I loved Mikhail’s backstory; the historical elements were fascinating and so well done. Mikhail, not being the subtlest, I was wondering how this romance would ever work. The historical details are fabulous, there is wonderful information about gems, a few terrific paranormal twists, and great secondary characters: I adored Randolph Belishaw, and I loved the politics, which usually put me to sleep. My only problem was that I couldn’t get totally on board with the romance between Mikhail and Piper because of how they “met”, which in this case is capital, unless you like your romance dark, and I’m not sure if MIKHAIL was intended that way. Towards the end, there are brilliant intriguing things about the Brotherhood of the Blood Moon, which sound extremely promising. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

Second in the series, and I am loving it. What Mikhail had gone through had me rooting for him to succeed at love and life. Piper was the kick he needed. Their trials and tribulations had me smiling, crying, and crossing my fingers. I enjoyed the ending and look forward to Rurik's story, hoping to glimpse everyone we have met so far. I received a copy of this story as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.

Sometimes you find a book that just draws you in and completely grabs you. It starts with the first sentence and grips your attention all the way until it’s unwanted ending. You smile, you laugh, gasp, most definitely wish your own mate was handy, and at times reach for the box of Kleenex. Mikhail surpassed my expectations and just blew me away! Mikhail is a 2000-year-old dragon shifter who lives in Cornwall, England, having been exiled by his father over 500 years ago for losing a horde of jewels. Even worse, they were taken from him by the woman who was supposed to be his one true mate. He has lived with his dragon mourning the loss of his mate, angered at losing the jewels and missing his brothers whom he hasn’t seen in 200 years. But now the jewels have resurfaced, and Mikhail plans to get them back. And he plans on enlisting American Piper Linwood, a gemologist, to help him. Piper is in London to examine and help evaluate the jewels for sale at auction. When she meets Mikhail, she’s instantly attracted to him. When Mikhail and Piper kiss, Mikhail realizes she’s his mate! I’ll let you read the rest of the story, and believe me, you want to. There’s a bad dragon out to steal the jewels, a secret organization, some sizzling hot sex scenes that you’ll need a fan for, and a definitely 4 hanky cry scene. I can’t wait for the next book!

There's just something about dragons that sets them apart from other shifters, and Mikhail fits right in. He's charming, sexy, mysterious, and romantic. I have to say that I wasn't sure about Piper at first, but she did grow on me as the story progressed and I liked this pair together. The story starts by giving us Mikhail's back story, taking place some 500 years ago, then jumps to present day. Mikhail's lost treasure is unearthed and naturally, he can't resist going after it. He meets Piper and their story moves quickly from there. The book has romance, some sexy fun, a bit of intrigue, and some heart pounding action. I haven't read the first in this series, but had no trouble following this one as a standalone. Mikhail's story did pique my interest enough that I'll be checking out the first book.

Usually I only read historical romance, but I stepped out because this was written by Lauren Smith who is a wonderful historical romance writer. It definitely held my attention and getting to know about dragon shifters was intriguing. Set in present day, Mikhail Barinov, was suppose to protect the hoard of jewels owned by his family of dragons. But eons ago he was deceived and lost them, to of all people Queen Elizabeth. Now as the jewels resurface centuries later in London, he is determined to regain the treasure and be redeemed so he can return home. Piper Linwood, a professional gemologist is assigned to evaluate the jewels that have been unearthed. As you might image therein lies the conflict as Mikhail and she come head to head. This is an intense story that will bring the quest for the gems an endgame of the quest for each other. A great paranormal romance you will not need to miss!
