Review: MISSION TO PROTECT (Military K-9 Unit, Book 1) by Terri Reed Publication Date: April 1, 2018 Genre: Romantic Suspense Reviewed by: Reading in Pajamas/ Donna Rated 3.5 Stars This is book one in a 4-book series, each installment written by a different author. I enjoyed the mystery and suspense in this light romance. Although there was an aspect that was specific to Felicity, the underlying intrigue will follow the series. The story is set on an Air Force base. I liked that it wasn’t bogged down in acronyms and jargon that most wouldn’t understand, yet you knew where you were. Felicity and Westley were a nice couple who clung to their religious beliefs to get them through the tough times. I don’t normally read faith-based books, but it was not the central focus of the novel. I liked quick read and look forward to reading the next book. *Review copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for an review.

This is book one in the Military K-9 Unit, so what a great place to start. This book is full of mystery, suspense, sparks, surprises, romance and more. If you like books to come to a complete ending, you will not be happy with this one, however if you can hang in there for the next book you will love it. This book ties up some loose ends but not all. Staff Sergeant Felicity Monroe loves her job working with the K-9 unit, however her handsome boss, Master Sergeant Westley James, can certainly get on her nerves. When the Red Rose killer makes her a target, Westley must protect her at all cost. I love the sparks that fly between Felicity and Westley, they both have things they need to work though, but their chemistry is great. I look forward to reading more in this series.

As a huge fan of Terri Reed's writing, I have been looking forward to reading this book. And it definitely didn't disappoint. It has the perfect mix of romance, suspense, and Christian faith-based elements. The story is intense, riveting, humorous, scary, and inspiring. The K-9 stories have always had a special spot in my heart, and this story made me appreciate and respect them even more. The dogs play an important role in the story, and Dakota is a hero on his own rights. Staff Sergeant Felicity Monroe and Master Sergeant Westley James are both strong, capable characters who have deep pain and sorrow in their hearts from their past. Both of them have struggled with their relationships with their parents, both of them have overcome obstacles and made a good life for themselves, lives where they are comfortable in, where they thrive and are successful. All this could come to an end if they would act upon the attraction they feel for each other. I loved the frenemies to romance theme that was going on here. It gave the story a dash of a thrill, angst, and humor to see Felicity and Westley find a way over the walls they had built around themselves to protect their hearts, and thus their future lives in the air force. The danger surrounding the base with the serial killer on the loose is constant, the intensity is high, and the attacks and crimes keep piling up, creating confusion and distraction. The series continues with the hunt for the serial killer, thus a little cliffhanger at the end, but the crimes in this story were satisfactorily solved. A captivating and intriguing story that was easy to get lost in. The characters were alluring, their faith in God inspiring, their strength and willingness to serve was heartening, their connection to each other was true, honest and fervent. The scare and terror the killer created was a constant factor yet the military staff handled the cases with cool, calm, professionalism that was impossible not to admire. I enjoyed the story immensely, looking forward to more in the series. ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side

A Mission to Protect is part of the series in for those who read one of the previous books you’ll be excited to see that void the serial killer has escaped prison. He is a serious threat and several people are murdered within the first few chapters of the book. Felicity was in basic training with him and his on his list of people to kill. Felicity is a very relatable character. She has lost her father and is now The target of a serial killer. She is in the canine training program. She happens to be the youngest in the new with so she feels like her boss Wesley gives her a very hard time. She has a great balance of strength but also dealing with her grief that makes her very human and relatable. And still strong. Wesley is her boss at the canine training facility in the military. I really liked his character and how his feelings for her or revealed. And he explains to us why he’s treated her so totally because he was concerned that people will think he showed her favoritism because he was attracted to her. Their attraction is way more than physical. The author shares the character traits of each of them and one of the other is attracted to them. There are several secondary characters and I have suspected several of them of being involved. It has created for a very suspenseful story. I received this book from Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review. You can see my full review at More Than a Review dot com where I rate the level of sex, violence, language and drug/alcohol use in books.

I'm very excited that another military continuity is beginning! I love them! This one looks like it's going to be a great one! I love that it involves K-9's! They do a valuable service and I look forward to learning more about them in the books ahead. This first book sets the stage of a serial killer who escapes from prison and wants revenge on an Air Force base in Texas. He leaves his calling card - a red rose - for Staff Sergeant Felicity Monroe so she knows she is on his revenge list! How scary that must be - to know you are in the sights of a serial killer! Master Sergeant Westley James and his K-9 become her guardians to protect her from the Red Rose killer only to discover that there is someone else who wants her dead! You definitely need to read this book and begin the journey of the Red Rose Killer! It looks like this series is going to be fantastic!!!

Tasked with keeping Staff Sergeant Felicity Monroe alive & safe from the “Red Rose” serial killer, Master Sergeant Westley James takes his role seriously. With the help of K-9 officer Dakota, she’s in good hands. Both are loyal, tough, protective and vigilant. When it comes to matters of the heart, however, Westley has trouble keeping the lines from blurring. Definitely a riveting start to a new continuity series about Military K-9 officers and their partners! Terri Reed is one author who knows how to portray the hard working dogs, I always know to expect a read that will keep me glued to the pages. Not only is this about trying to catch the Red Rose killer, but also trying to find who killed Felicity’s father for information on a case that happened a year ago. This kept me guessing and I thought I had some characters pegged only to be proven wrong. I love when you can’t guess whodunit! So while the mystery of the Red Rose killer isn’t yet solved, it leaves you many clues & looking forward to the other books coming in this series to find out how they catch him. Both Westley and Felicity fight their attraction to each other for reasons that have to do with their pasts. I love learning the back stories of them both; it made me sympathetic to them and connected me in a deeper way. I also loved the camaraderie of the whole Canyon Air Force base team members & getting to meet each of them. The dogs add a special layer to the story, of course! A must read with twists you don’t see coming, a bonus two-for-one mystery, great characters, happily-ever-after love story, a plotline to keep you invested and a faith element to keep you grounded! * I received a complimentary copy and was under no obligation to leave a favorable review. All opinions are my own. *
