It's good to see that Dan Gutman is still having fun writing these books, and this might be the silliest one yet! Jim Paillot's illustrations are, once again, perfectly delightful.

Mrs. Lizzy is Dizzy is a chapter book written by Dan Gutman and illustrated by Ju Paillot! This book is part of the My Weird School Days series and all of these books have great rhyming titles such as, Mrs. Dole is Out of Control and Mr. Granite is from Another Planet. The series follows A.J. a young boy and his encounters with wacky teachers. This book is perfect for the 3rd- 4th grade (ages 7-10) reading level and to help children transition into reading chapter books. The text is big and has big line spaces. Also the each chapter is filled with great pictures and illustrations to break up the text. Another really awesome text feature in this book is the author uses footnotes, which is unique for a children¿s book but great way for children to learn how to read them. For example, Gutman uses a footnote to explain the quotation ¿To what do we owe the pleasure of a company?¿. I think it is great that Gutman introduces children to sayings that they might not know the meaning of, he does not ¿dumb¿ down the characters for the readers, instead he provides the students with the necessary tools to understand the text by themselves. Mrs. Lizzy is Dizzy is told from A.J. `s perspective, and a new teacher, Mrs. Lizzy, comes to teach in their school. A.J. and his friends think she is crazy. A.J. thinks that Mrs. Lizzy is so weird because she teaches them how to do things like making balloon animals and composting worms. The students want to prove that Mrs. Lizzy escaped from a mental institution so that they do not have to learn all of these useless skills, especially not during recess.

I enjoy reading this series to my child, however, I found this particular installment to be extremely offensive.  As a mental health professional, I found Mr. Gutman's use of the terms "crazy," "psycho," and "loony bin" to described Mrs. Lizzy to be ill-advised.  I explained to my daughter that these terms are offensive/insensitive to people dealing with mental illness.  Considering the stigma associated with mental illness in our society, I am surprised Harper Collins allowed such language to be published, especially to an audience of children.
