Nate's Destiny is book six of Shirleen Davies’ MacLarens of Boundary Mountain. It is a marvelous second chance historical romance. While neither Nate Hollis nor Geneen MacGregor are MacLarens, this story fits nicely in the series. It has characters from the former books as minor characters, but this is Nate and Geneen’s story, so it stands well on its own. The ravages of war are clearly seen on Nate’s mind and body as he has come west from Pennsylvania. It brings to light how addiction is not a new problem. Nate’s decisions are logical and sensible concerning the problems that he struggles with. Looking at him, he is certainly one who did the right thing, the wrong way. Easily, I sided with him wanting Geneen to give him a second chance. With the help of friends, personal determination, and the love of a good woman, Nate can win his personal war. I was rooting for him all the way. Besides his struggles and the romantic conflict, there is a subplot with more than one villain. Authentic at its core since that is so true in life; where there is good, there is also bad. The reader meets two early on in the story, but there are twists in how it all plays out. By bringing in the problems of the community, the mine and the sheriff, it kept this story a page turner for me. The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
