About the Author

Meeka Nyota, an internationally acclaimed poet/author hails from the beautiful caribbean island of Jamaica. The name Meeka Nyota is of African origin, meaning “Strong Warrior”. She was born as Natalie Reid in Kingston, the nation’s capital, and raised in the city of Portmore in St. Catherine parish. Meeka is the daughter of British mother Jacqueline Chow and Jamaican father Robert Reid; who is a veteran jockey also known as “Callie Weed.” As a youth, she attended Vaz Preparatory School then St. Andrew School for Girls. Afterwards, she attended Quality Academics, where her life of poetry would take form. During this time she had a chance meeting with a poet known as Habbakuk, who simply asked her if she liked poetry. As fate would have it, he gave her a homework assignment, which was to write a poem. After much meditation on the task, she was inspired to write her first poem. He would eventually become her mentor and listening ear for her poetic voice.
After her time at Quality Academics, she moved to London, England at the age of 16 where she attended sixth form. Following this, she attended Lewisham College and later continued her studies at London South Bank University where she pursued a degree in Culinary Arts. As she documented each segment of her life in poetic fashion, she soon realized that she had exceeded even her own expectations and was now, as she calls it, “On A Mission!”
On her return to Jamaica, Meeka Nyota was introduced to Joel Ellis and started to explore her passion for Dub Poetry. She first recorded “Dis Herb”, following “Woman of Creation”, “I Chant” and “Haile Selassie Mission”. She has performed in New York, Miami, and Jamaica making her presence felt on the international poetry scene. Likening her love for creating delicious pastry (as a Chef/Culinary Artist), she proclaims that her poetry “Leaves you wanting more…yet satisfied”. She is also part of a movement with other Jamaican Dub poets/musicians as a collective known as the “Dub Word Warriors”. This in includes the founder of Dub poetry the legendary Oku Onuora and Jawara Ellis.
