4.5 Stars Laila must raise and protect her orphaned infant nephew, but a new lord is coming and their future is uncertain. Lord Aymon is a Norman and Laila has not had any good dealings with them and they are looking any better. He decrees that they must wed, but Laila is able to gets him to agree to certain terms to the marriage. As their life together begins, forces and people come to conspire against them and Lord Aymon is in the center of the turmoil and is arrested for treason. Can the two of them get through this and be there for each other? Will Laila stand by her husband and show him that he is worth becoming the man he always wanted to be? Last but not least can they be the Lord and Lady that their people need? Can they make their home Tynte safe and prosperous and ensure that everyone’s future is bright? To do that they have to find the love that they never believed was possible…together. At first I was not sure about this book, but the more I read the more I loved it. I love how Laila and Lord Aymon came together in spite of their really big differences and prejudices. They learned about each by talking and stood together to become a family and find that love that was meant to be for them. This is a great read and a really good historical novel. Worth the read.

This story really pulled me in from the beginning, as it has the type of set-up that REALLY keeps me turning the pages; the reluctant relationship.Laila (with no choice in the matter) enters into a marriage arrangement with Aymon, and he's really no too thriller with her, either. But reading how their relationship evolved and how they were forced to lean on each other kept me glued to the book! The final conflict was gripping. Thank goodness this is a romance novel (which guarantees a happy ending), otherwise I would think that both Laila and Aymon were doomed. Still, knowing the relative outcome, the thrill of reading the action-and-adventure of what they had to go through to GET to the end was a nail-biter.Louise did a fantastic job of writing the "love" between Laila and Aymon and I enjoyed reading the interactions they had. While the ending was not entirely what I expected, it seemed fitting given the time-period of the book. This was just an all-around fantastic historical romance!***I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***

I received this book from Goddess Fish Promotions in return for a fair and honest review. The Normans have invaded England and are literally on the warpath. Laila and her sister, Ead, are recovering from the invasion of their home and the deaths of their loved ones. Their home has been given to a Norman Lord and they must appease him unless they want to become homeless. This is a gritty story that paints a story of what it might have been like during those times. At times, not easy to read due to the pictures in my mind, this was nevertheless a very satisfying read. Our heroine is a sassy female who has been allowed to live an unconventional life by her father and can shoot, hunt and fish with no assistance from a male. Do not ask her to sew, mind you! As the story progresses you see how both main characters learn that the whole of a race can't be swiped by the same prejudices. There is good and bad in everyone and everything. Seeing them learn to trust and care for each other was wonderful. The secondary characters are just as well rounded - Hildred, Guy, Alyse and Hugh to name just some. A brilliant historical romance with the right balance of realism and romance to make it a gripping read. Highly recommended.
