Awesome and very original tale of vampires. Why are vampires harmed by religious symbols? What's with the mist and bat thing? Golden answers these questions, and more. Surprising historical figures pop up, and the history of vampires is revealed. My favorite vampire novel. First of the Shadow Saga.

A thrilling new take on the "vampire" genre. Spoiled only by the ending which disintegrates into a confusing free-for-all. Perhaps the author had too much of an eye on the staging of the movie adaptation?

What if vampires weren't necessarily evil--they've only been brainwashed to think they are? And what if all their traditional weaknesses: sunlight, holy water, crosses, aren't actually weaknesses at all, but also the result of brainwashing? What if they're even more powerful than they realize, but the Church has used superstition to keep these Defiant Ones under control? That's the premise of Of Saints and Shadows, as it follows renegade vampire Peter Octavian on his search for the truth and his efforts to save his fellow vampires on the eve of the Blessed Event, when the Vatican's secret army intends to wipe out the Defiant Ones once and for all. Excellent story. I'll be getting the sequel.

Another fine read by Christopher Golden. A thrill ride into the secrets of the Vatican and the society hidden within. The shady priests involved with murder and mayhem, in their search and destruction of vampires known as the Defiant Ones. Delving into history of this group and the Vaticans obscure society of sorcerers, bent on retrieving an historical The Book of Shadows. Containing super spells to inflict upon the Defiant Ones. This is the first of a series in The Shadow Saga. Highly recommended stories as are all Christopher Goldens books. He weaves tales of magic.

One of my fellow booksellers dropped this book in my hand and insisted I read it. I am very grateful for that command. I did see some slight similarities in this to the old TV series 'Forever Knight' in that the main character is in law enforcement and since I loved that series, I figured I would like this book. WOW. This is not your typical gothic vampire story. The church has kept secret the origin of the vampire race and it is about to be revealed. You will meet news reporters, historical figures and witness THE battle of the ages. Very enjoyable... can someone PLEASE pick up the next two in the trilogy for a reprinting??

I was really expecting just another 'good' vampire novel but was amazed by the writing and the plot twists. I came to care about the characters since they were so well developed. The story was fantastic. I can't recommend this highly enough.

This book is amazing I think I must have read it like 5 times already. The story and the characters are so well written that you almost think its real. When I read this book I absolutely fell in love with Peter Octavian; he's wity, charming, playful, and an all around dreamy vampire guy. All the characters in this story were amazing I never wanted to put the book down. Christopher Golden is a really awesome writer I love reading his books they always keep you sucked in until the very last page and then when the book is done you just want it to keep going.

Saints the title given to the priests in the novel, and Shadows the vampiric term in this novel are very uniquelly used in this novel. The plot always keeps you on your toes, and very little is constant throughout the novel. The author uses very descriptive wording giving the reader a clear picture to follow. In my opinion this is an outstanding book and I would recommend it to my friends and others, but not the weak of heart. A book that you will never put down once you start reading, until reading this novel I never enjoyed reading for recreation....
