"Ogilvy on Advertising" is a primer on advertising by the founder and former head of Ogilvy & Mather advertising agency. Written from the perspective of a curmudgeonly but wizened old man, the book is a charismatic introduction to a business-centric view of advertising and a great slice of life of an agency in the 1980s.Replete with samples and examples, Ogilvy wades through many topics without ever becoming verbose. His pointed writing style work nicely with the subject and belie his favoritism towards copywriters. However, as the book is in large part an account of Ogilvy's own campaign successes, it carries a snide self-promotional zeal and the author does congratulate himself on multiple occasions.

I am not one of those people who are crazy for books about advertising or the advertising industry, but I think that David Ogilvy had a lot of wisdom for anyone in a creative field.

David Ogilvy is able to share his years of advertising experience in 20 short chapters. Being principal of a design firm this was a very enjoyable read. I think anyone interested in advertising will find this a great book. I was able to find good helpful information in the first reading and I am surprised the new things I pick up when I either re-read or just flip through this book. This book left me wanting to read more on Ogilvy and his success in the advertising industry. This is a great resource on advertising.

'Ogilvy on Advertising' thought me some tricks of the trade I never could have learned in Ad School. David's style also helped unleach creative abilities I wasn't sure how to express. When I did, the results were miraculous! A great book for the novice. His sense of humour will also be an added bonus after a hard day's work. Buy it!
