And the burn continues……fangs sink into flesh…..control and lust at its ultimate……blood humming in the veins…..explosive and hot!! Cynthia Eden’s latest release, “Once Bitten Twice Burned” in her Phoenix Fire Series, sure fanned my flames of paranormal interest and the uncontrollable urge to read and read more. Ryder and Sabine turned out to be such intense and mesmerizing characters, their story sizzled with passion and chemistry.   How can the coming together of a Vampire and a Phoenix not entertain us to the fullest? Meeting as experiments in the crazy Wyatt’s laboratory Genesis, Sabine gets thrown into Ryder’s cell as his meal! And amidst the bloodthirsty lust of a vampire and the burning desire of a phoenix in transition, Ryder and Sabine try to beat all odds to survive Wyatt’s super crazy experiments as he tries to build the ultimate fighting soldier. Like I said before, Cynthia’s paranormal books were my first introduction to “Paranormal 101’. I’ve never read an author, whose books narrate a story with such intensity and authority in the words, lust and passion in action, control and power in dominance and have never looked back! What really amazes me to no end is her depth of creativity. Her stories are urban fantasies with the existence of paranormal in our daily lives. Her in depth research and her amazing ability to come with such fascinating fiction is no tall order. I sure would like to get into her brain for one day! The “Phoenix Series” should be read in sequence to follow the storyline and characters. Her first book, “Burn For Me” introduces us to Genesis and Richard Wyatt, his subject 13 aka Cain O’Conner and Eve Bradley. I was fascinated with Cain and his character, as much as I was totally snowballed with Wyatt’s crazy experiments and his history. With the first two books, it looks like the destruction and Genesis has been controlled, but who knows what more can happen in this crazy world of paranormal as Dante and his Cassandra try to come to grips with each other. Now this is another story for another time.

AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall 4 Narration 2 Story 5 This is Ryders story, an older vampire that has been imprisoned, starved and tortured all in the name of science. He’s done everything he can think of to NOT give the evil doctor a clue. And then, this starved vampire wakes to find a woman in his cell – a sacrifice that doesn’t quite smell right, but insists she is human. Sabine had been blissfully unaware of the experiments or paranormal beings as she lived her life quietly on the outside. But, now she’s been kidnapped and left in a cell… with someone. Ryder is amazing in this story, instantly he realizes his snack of Sabine is so much more, and seeks to enlighten her as he plans to get them both out of the lab. But, finding her unharmed and alive, the doctor pulls her into the experiments, determined to discover her secrets. After meeting Ryder in the first book, I was curious to see just what he would do to break free of the torture, and if he would actually make the effort to get the other imprisoned subjects free as well. And the connection that he finds with Sabine as he explains their situation and her specialness is just marvelous. Adding the unique twist of Phoenix shifters to her stories, Eden’s characters are far more complex and nuanced than one would expect, adding the evil doctor and the various experiments paired with the red-hot connection between these two adds intrigue, drama and excitement to the story. Narration for this story is provided by Jillian Macie again, and while I didn’t see the improvements in presentation that I was hoping for (distinct presentation of character voices, pitch and pacing changes in action and emotional situations ) again her performance did not enhance nor overtly distract from the story and plot. There were some moments that felt authentic to Sabine – particularly with her confusion, but the overall performance lacked distinction to make it memorable. I received an AudioBook copy of the title from Tantor Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Eden has other great series eg bad things and fallen angel series. Unfortunately this book is the worst. Poor pacing....it was so slow i skipped 97 pages and still understood the plot...and the hero and heroine are annoying. Book 1 set up a great premise for this couple but author failed to execute on what could have been an intriguing book.

Good plot but NO character development. There was no sense of who the main characters were so it was hard to care about them or get into this book. Didnt bother finishing it.

4 - "I want you to see what I am." ... And to stay with me anyway. Stars. Another solid gold winner from the imagination from Ms. Eden. "You taste like everything I had while I walked the earth as a man, everything I wanted, and I f*****g crave you." This series just gets better and better. I recommend that you read book one before you read Once Bitten, Twice Burned as part of this book actually runs concurrently with Burn for Me. Ryder and Sabine are another strong couple, hot (literally) sexy, and not afraid to beat the crap out of anyone that gets in their way. "I look at you and I see the one person that I want most in this world." Once again the secondary characters really bring this book to life, Dante, Rhett and Cassie in particular. Knowing that the next book Playing With Fire is Dante's story, makes my girly parts clench! I am kind of running out of good things too say about Cynthia Eden, now. Every book I have read by this author is superb, and this one is no exception. "For a vampire, you aren't so bad."

Book two in the Phoenix Fire series.   Ryder is one of the oldest and most deadly of his kind.  He’s been betrayed and left for dead or even worse, left at the hands of a mad man to be tested and experimented on.  He is starving and long past his usual steadfast control.  He breaks when a tasty morsel is thrown into his cell.  He never meant to kill her. Sabine is having an all-around crappy life.  Taken against her will, thrown into a cell and is now dinner for something she never even believed in – Vampires.  Attractive as he may be, she will not be his meal, but too bad she is not strong enough to fight him off.  She thought it was bad before, well try dying. While both Ryder and Sabine have died in their past, they must try to live long enough to escape the facility that has brought them together, but is destined to tear them apart.  Life and death situations, surprising betrayals and passions that burns their souls; through it all, can Ryder keep the most precious thing in his life safe or will she be taken from him over and over again? I was very pleasantly surprised by this book.  I rarely start a book if I have not read the first in the series, but I did with Once Bitten, Twice Burned.  I couldn’t tell you who the prior characters were or their story.  I actually had to look up the names for the prior book, Burn for Me, to know if they were involved.  So I would have no problem recommending this novel as a standalone.  It is very well written and held it’s own. Ms. Eden has built an amazing world with perfect twists, compelling characters, and wondrous villains.  I couldn’t put it down and enjoyed every page.  She made me want to spend time with them through their trials and heartache.  She drew me in with the story, held me with their passions and captured me with their pain.  Once Bitten, Twice Burned is a fantastic story.  It is a departure from normal romance, with heart pounding action and an engaging refreshing plot.  Even if the book alone didn’t make me want to read more of the Phoenix Fire series, after reading the epilogue, I’m more than looking forward to the next in the series – Playing with Fire, which comes out the end of August.  I can’t wait!

Ryder was a character that kept my interested since the first time I met him in BURN FOR ME and I was curious to read his book, to get to know him better and, of course, seeing him falling in love and having his HEA. I enjoyed this ride with him and Sabine, a ride of action and desesperation that unraveled to an emotional ending. Theirs is a love story but also a story of survival, because of what they went through at Genesis. One aspect that I appreciated greatly was seeing a little bit of family: Sabine had a family, Keith and his son - another family. It gives a special emotion to read about families and how they deal with a paranormal person in the family. Finally: Dante! Oh, if Ryder had my interest since the beginning, Dante now has all my attention and interest! :)
