In a candid and courageous exposition, Shirley MacLaine shares the first steps toward her spiritual evolution in Out On A Limb. Braving ridicule and public humiliation, MacLaine first published this memoir in 1986. Twenty-five years and 3 million printed copies later, the book is as relevant (if not more so) than when it first appeared. MacLaine's path toward spiritual enlightenment began like many others'. Yearning to understand the meaning of life and to find her greater purpose amongst humanity, she found herself drawn to key people in her life who would accompany her along her journey of awakening. Using the intimate details of her relationship with a prominent British politician named Gerry as the backdrop, MacLaine explains how difficult it was for her to understand a relationship so obviously mismatched. Still, she found herself almost desperately attracted to this man. Through one of her closest friends, David, she began her foray into the realm of metaphysics by studying near-death experiences and reading about reincarnation. Finding these Eastern concepts difficult to come to terms with, MacLaine visited with several trance mediums who channeled nonphysical entities from the astral plane. Despite her obvious skepticism, she was granted profound and accurate answers from these psychic mediums, and the experience propelled MacLaine forward into years of deep study and self-analysis. By understanding past lives, the relationships formed in those lives, and the karma we bring forward into our current existence, MacLaine suddenly found herself with answers to several unexplained questions regarding her current romance, friendships, and career choices. Studying world-renowned psychic Edward Cayce and his messages obtained by reading the Akashic Record (the spiritual encyclopedia of all existence), MacLaine became firmly grounded in her own faith in the concepts of mysticism (universal consciousness and oneness with God). While in Peru with her close friend David, MacLaine experienced a profound awakening while camping in the mountains. While taking hot mineral baths in the mountain rivers, staying in a shack with a dirt floor, and eating basic foods prepare by the indigenous people, MacLaine and David delve further into metaphysical discussions, including the existence of UFOs and extraterrestrials. David explains to MacLaine that he has had contact with an extraterrestrial named Mayan, and she has shared with him the secrets of human spirituality and enlightenment. Grappling with the concepts David shares with her, MacLaine never really does explain whether or not she truly believes what David shares with her. However, the many real experiences and constant synchronicity within her life has expanded her curiosity and brought a true inner peace and happiness. One could read Out On A Limb with a Westerner's mentality and deny the claims of spirituality MacLaine confesses. However, as MacLaine explains, the majority of the world's population (through Eastern tradition) believes in reincarnation, higher spirituality, karma, and the existence of extraterrestrials. One should keep an open mind and heart. This book is a must-read for those on the path of spiritual enlightenment.

This book describes an honest journey to explore the higher power and origin of our soul and being. Not everyone can afford the luxury of traveling to satisfy their curiosity or the expense of hiring spiritual advisers. It was a great read. I was left feeling there is more to this life than we understand.

This book along with the many others of her books I have read are just incredible. I believe her to be such a great teacher and I look forward to reading more of her books. The "knowing" feeling is something I've always had and I love her books because it really explains a lot of my feelings. Love her!
