Reviewed by Kim Anisi for Readers' Favorite Are you a writer who often feels like he/she is getting nowhere? Then Overwhelmed Writer Rescue by Colleen M. Story could be a life-saver (or rather book-saver). Many writers are, for some reason, not finishing what they start, or never even start on their project. They are either too busy, too stressed, too depressed, too tired, too something. Not many would admit it's all just an excuse to keep yourself from writing. Fear, as this book teaches us, is one of the saboteurs that stand in the way of your productivity and creativity. The author promises the reader practical steps to overcome distractions and focus faster, information that will help you to figure out why you even have a problem with being productive, and what you need to do to find your very own personal motivation style. You will also learn how to regain control over your time. And this all - drum roll - without silly affirmations and "secrets". I was positively surprised at the wealth of information contained in Overwhelmed Writer Rescue by Colleen M. Story. I expected more of the same, as I've read many books on writing and being a writer. This one stands out from the others (at least for me) because the advice given is not only useful for your life as a writer, but also for your life in general. I also learned a few new things, e.g. I wasn't aware of the existence of time personalities and how this affects writing (and life in general). The book was a very refreshing read as the author clearly knows how annoying it is when you tell a writer - or anybody - that positive thinking and affirmations will get you where you want to be, if only you are positive enough. To me, it always seems like a personal attack if a book tells me I don't get what I want because I am not positive and smiley-happy-chappy enough. Most introverts will probably be able to relate. This book offers a wide variety of solutions. Not all will be useful for everyone as some are aimed at particular personality types - but that makes them helpful because the author understands that one size never fits all. I was delighted to find some ideas that seem like they were written down just for writers like me. Others I could simply ignore because some issues aren't an issue for me, but will be for other writers. In addition to content you really can't fault, the design of the book is also worth mentioning. It's a joy to get through the book as readability and the design can motivate you to keep going, and have both clearly been taken into account. You don't just get one long block of text after the other. Even if you don't struggle with your writing, this book can be a great resource to keep you on track and remind you of what's really important.
Reviewed by Sheri Hoyte for Reader Views (2/18) “Overwhelmed Writer Rescue” by Colleen M. Story, provides sound guidance for boosting productivity and improving the quality of your writing time through clear, practical advice and applications. With simple, but not easy steps, Story outlines ways to restore and reset your creative mindset in a manner that is easy to read and comprehend. Presented in four sections, each one provides sensible, graspable information to help you achieve the writing life you desire. Will Someone Please Give Me More Time to Write? In this aptly titled introduction, Story establishes the crux of the problem: the absolute need for more writing time. The author’s passion and excitement to share what she’s learned with others is inspiring and sets the tone for the rest of the book, instilling confidence in the reader from the very beginning. Throughout the book Story inserts what she calls Time Treasures – exercises and tips designed to help you find more time in your life for writing, and getting the most value out of that time. I found these tips most informative and useful. The first section clearly defines obstacles such as romanticizing what being a writer looks like versus the busy, demanding reality of the majority of writers today. Learning how to accept that we are human and can only do so much every twenty-four hours, Story suggests ways to let go of unrealistic expectations and things that don’t serve our creativity. Part II: Increase Productivity to Expand Your Writing Time provides valuable information on how to prioritize and focus, understanding when your best time of the day is to write, ways to get started writing when you feel like you’re in a slump, and the importance of taking breaks. Of particular interest personally, as I’ve struggled with this my entire life, is the section on learning how to say “no” to others, freeing up time for the things that are important to me. Good stuff. The entire book is well-written, enlightening and inspirational, but if I had to pick a section that resonates most with me, it would have to be Part III: Outwit Your Brain’s Productivity Saboteurs, which outlines the seven specific personality traits that sabotage your most well-intentioned efforts. The way Story describes my individual productivity thieves such as perfectionism, workaholism, and setting destructive goals – it’s almost like she knows me! Seriously though, these chapters will help you understand your biggest stumbling blocks and set you on a more productive course. The final section wraps things up nicely, presenting four skills writers must learn for a long, productive career in writing. Overall, I highly recommend “Overwhelmed Writer Rescue” by Colleen M. Story. I discovered more than a handful of items about myself and my practices that hinder my ability to be my best creative self. I recommend taking your time going through each chapter and section of the book. If there is a survey – take it, if there is an activity or writing prompt/assignment – do it! They are well worth the time! Though geared toward writers, I believe this book would be a successful tool for anyone wanting to learn how to overcome procrastination and your natural productivity obstacles to increase motivation and free up more time for doing the things you love.
Time management issues have never been so well conquered! Overwhelmed Writer Rescue By Colleen M. Story The Overwhelmed Writer Rescue is a book targeted to those who write, but the tips that author Colleen Story offers can be utilized by anyone who is feeling trapped and short on time when it comes to their own personal creative endeavors. All too often we get caught up in the myth what our perfect life would look like and by focusing all our attention on this fantasy we sabotage our efforts before we can even get started. We dream of all the time we could have if we were solely dedicated to our art and didn't need to support it with additional employment. Colleen provides tricks to change the mindset that is holding us back. Time is a matter of perspective and one that can be affected by our emotional state. Multitasking cuts into our time by providing distractions that thwart us from our goal. And the biggest distraction that compounds the trap of multitasking is ready access to technology. Disconnect and allow yourself to experience nothing and allow your mind free rein to explore and create. By changing your thought processes you can achieve your goals. View time as money. Keep your goals realistic. Take care of yourself. The list of helps is quite impressive. And throughout there are exercises to help you determine your individual strengths and weaknesses and prioritize your time so that you can answer the calling that you have. The cover has the following subheading Boost Productivity, Improve Time Management, and Replenish the Creator Within and I feel that this book does indeed offer much to help the reader to achieve these goals. And these tips can be used for any aspect of one's life whether in a creative endeavor or in the traditional workplace or even in one's home life. One can learn to prioritize the dreaded and endless to-do list and enjoy what lies beyond. What is the passion that you have pushed aside for your 9-to-5 job? Get ready to re-enter the creative life you've been dreaming about. I was provided a review copy of this book by the author with no expectations of a positive review - all opinions expressed are my own.
Becoming a published author is no easy task, there are a lot of different things that go into the making of a book. There is research, planing how your story is going to go and then there is the actual writing. Writing takes a lot of time and most people who write have a family and a job that also requires a lot of attention. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and just want to quit on your creative dreams but there is help out there if you’re willing to look. Overwhelmed Writer Rescue by Colleen M Story is a well researched self-help book that gives great advice on finding the time to write. This book begins with a personal story from Colleen where she recalls attending a dinner with 15 other authors after a writing workshop. Colleen was working as a freelance writer and as a musician but she wanted to see her own fiction published. She was hoping for some good advice on how to manage her time better so she could make her dream come true, but she wasn’t able to find it. Since she didn’t get the advice she wanted, Colleen started to do some research and found several ways to use her time more effectively. One thing that she preaches about here is getting rid of all the little things that eat up your time to be creative. Most importantly you have to limit yourself on social media, turn off the television and stop looking at your smart phone. There are lots of little things that eat away at your time and putting limits on these things will give you time to do what you really want to do. Colleen gives you the tools you need to follow your dreams and she points out that it’s not about working harder, it’s about working smarter and time management is the key. There is a lot of helpful information in Overwhelmed Writer Rescue, almost too much. Colleen gets deep into making the most of your writing time and throws a lot of information at you. She also gives you references to back up her advice and questionnaires to help you find the answers you’re looking for. This isn’t the kind of book that you would sit and read from cover to cover but its a great reference book to look at when you need it. I liked how after each chapter there was a summary of the key points she was trying to get across. After she gives you all the detail on what she is trying to teach, she breaks it down into a simpler format that’s easy to reread when you need it. Most importantly this book is not just for writers either, it’s also a good source of info for finding the time to do whatever creative endeavor that you want to pursue. Colleen points out the importance of having a creative outlet and finding your calling in life. In this book she gives you a road map to make you more efficient at making your dreams come true. http://colleenmstory.com/
