About the Author

Yasuko Kimura is the author of numerous children’s books, including Fergus, Fergus and the Sea Monster, Fergus and the Snow Deer, The Magical Fish, and the Pakkun the Wolf series. She received the Critici in Erba Prize at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in 1986 for Today Is Not My Day.

K-Gr 3—In the topsy-turvy world of Pakkun the Wolf and his friends, the Land of Dinosaurs is a place below the world's surface, and a quick tumble takes Pakkun there (and back again). When one of Mrs. Hen's eggs rolls out of the nest, Pakkun offers to find it and tumbles head-over-heels through a cave-filled passageway. In the Land of Dinosaurs, he meets a new friend, Ptera, a pteranodon, who offers to help. They travel through deserts and oceans, past jungles and smoking volcanoes. At one point, Ptera's mother offers them a ride on her back. They meet a tyrannosaurus and an "always hungry" creature called Karaurus; Pakkun bares elongated fangs and scares him away. Long-necked Mrs. Saurapod suggests they try the Valley of Dinosaur Eggs, and there they find the tiny egg among many others. All of the eggs hatch, and Pakkun takes Mrs. Hen's chick home. Kimura's cartoon illustrations abound with whimsical details. Small, brown-furred Pakkun resembles a dog with a wide tuft of hair, close-set eyes, and large whiskery snout. Other animals including Mrs. Hen and Ptera, have large googly eyes. Even the fiercest animals are helpful: "Mr. T-Rex" interrupts his fight with a duck-billed dinosaur to respond politely to Ptera and Pakkun's inquiry. Children who dote on silly, googly-eyed monsters need look no further than this imported tale of a wolf chasing an errant chicken egg. When one of Mrs. Hen's eggs rolls out of the nest and down a hole, helpful Wolf Pakkun dives down in pursuit and fetches up facing a huge fossil skull. Yikes! But then: " ‘Ha, ha, ha!' a little voice laughed, ‘Welcome to the Land of Dinosaurs!' " That's Ptera, a beaky, comically cross-eyed new friend. Kimura stocks said land with oddly proportioned, loudly colored cartoon beasties loosely based on recognizable prehistoric creatures and placed in alien-looking settings featuring strange plants and clumps of jagged volcanoes. Pakkun searches for the egg over land and under the sea until, at the suggestion of Mrs. Saurapod [sic], he comes at last to a large pile of eggs—all of which hatch into a teeming, diverse swarm of smiling baby dinos plus, for sharper-eyed viewers to spot, one tiny chick. The 1982 original's transition to this edition has not been smoothly accomplished as, along with uncertain spelling (see above) and switches at odd moments between present tense and past, the text starts up on the title page and runs to a final sentence shoehorned onto the last page with the copyright fine print. But the storyline is too spare to be more than a pretext for a parade of daffy dinosaurs anyway. A bland tale for diaper-clad dinophiles, mildly spiced with visual pleasures and surprises.
