Overview

The American Revolution was a decisive conflict, which saw the birth of a new nation. Continental Army regulars fought in massive and famous battles from New England to Virginia, but in the South a different kind of warfare was afoot. Local militia, sometimes stiffened by a small core of the Continental Line, played a pivotal role. This lesser-known war ultimately decided the fate of the Revolution by thwarting the British "Southern strategy". In this title, the authors provide a unique and personal focus on the history of their own ancestors, who fought for the South Carolina Militia, to show just how effective the irregular forces were in a complex war of raids, ambushes, and pitched battles. About the Author

Ed Gilbert is a retired geoscientist, the author of a four-volume series on the history of the US Marine Corps tank units, and has written several numbers in the Osprey Warrior and Battle Orders series. Catherine Gilbert is a retired speech pathologist and audiologist. Her interest in genealogy led to extensive research into the organization and activities of the militia in the American War of Independence. Ed and Cathy are residents of Texas.

Steve Noon was born in Kent, UK, and attended art college in Cornwall. He's had a life-long passion for illustration, and since 1985 has worked as a professional artist. He has provided award-winning illustrations for the publishers Dorling Kindersley, where his interest in historical illustration began. Steve has illustrated over 30 books for Osprey
Ed Gilbert has written numerous titles in Osprey's Warrior, Battle Orders and Campaign series, with a focus on the history of the US Marine Corps and state militias in the American War of Independence and the War of 1812. The author of a four-volume history of Marine Tank battalions, and co-author of Tanks in Hell: A Marine Corps Tank Company on Tarawa and True for the Cause of Liberty (written with his wife Cathy), Ed sadly passed away in February 2019.
Catherine Gilbert is a retired speech pathologist and audiologist who has written for Osprey, and with Ed is co-author of True For The Cause Of Liberty – The Second Spartan Regiment In The American Revolution. Catherine and Ed were both awarded the Presidential Service Center's Distinguished Service Medal for their research and writing on the American Revolution in the Carolinas. Catherine is a resident of Texas.
