Prey No Longer
A step-by-step guide for survivors of sexual abuse.

First and foremost, this book is intended to reach out to all survivors from all
over the world to let you know that you are not alone in this struggle. This book is a hands-on legal guide for adult survivors of sexual abuse who want
to sue their perpetrator(s) for money damages or try to get them criminally prosecuted. It is a handbook for maneuvering through our legal system. It will answer many of the questions I have been asked over the years by thousands of survivors. Survivors want to know:
• Can I sue my father (or my abuser, the Catholic Church, or my coach) for what he did to me as a child?
• What is the law in my state? I can’t seem to find out if I still have any legal rights.
• How do I find an attorney who is willing to take my case?
• What can I expect during my case, what should I be prepared for?
• What can I do to strengthen my case? How can I prove what happened to me?
• How can I get my abuser arrested and prosecuted for what he did?
• Will my story be made public?
• I’m a teenager who still lives at home. How can I protect myself?
• What can I do to protect my brothers and sisters (or others) who are still living in
the same household with my abuser?
• My stepfather, who sexually abused me, has now remarried a woman who has
young children. Is there anything I can do to protect them?
I want to empower you by providing you with the answers to these questions, and give you hands on know-how if you choose to take action. Knowledge is power. Our written laws take this crime very seriously on the books but not always in practice. Often far too little is done to vindicate victims and punish predators, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Once you understand the legal system and how it works, you can decide what your best next step is. You need to know what your options are. Knowledge gives you control and gives you choice in how to proceed. As children, too often our choices were
taken away from us. This book is about giving you the information you need to have the power to decide how you want to go forward.

About the Author

Shari Karney pioneered legislation that changed the law for survivors of child sexual abuse in California, helping to inspire changes for victims of sexual abuse in 40 other states.

Shari is a widely respected legal expert for newsbreaking cases of the day, speaker spokesperson for children’s rights and owner of Barwinners. She recently appeared on HLN speaking about the Casey Anthony Murder Trial and has been interviewed regarding the Penn state sexual abuse scandal. Shari has appeared on Oprah, ABC Primetime, Court TV, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox Television, and hundreds of other television and radio shows. She was a legal expert for the Jon Benet Ramsey Case, and for the murder trials of O.J. Simpson, Robert Blake and Susan Smith.

Shari’s work on behalf of child sexual abuse victims was the subject of an NBC TV Movie called Shattered Trust, The Shari Karney Story.

Shari was her own first client. She began having her first memories of child sexual abuse while defending a three-year old child who had been sexually molested by her father. After serving two nights in jail for attempting to strangle the father-perpetrator on the witness stand, Shari was forced to come to terms with her own past.
