Step 1

THE RESUME

The interviewer should be able to get an overview of your experience and education by reading your resume. See sample resume on page 10.

What should your resume include?

Your resume should include:

1 - Your name, address, phone number, e-mail address (be certain the email address you use when looking for a job is appropriate. Example: eric04@yahoo. com not bigman@yahoo.com or ajohnson1975@yahoo.com not hotmomma@ yahoo.com).

2 - Summary of experience or objective

This should give highlights of your experience, qualifications and what your goals are as it relates to employment. See example on next page.

3 - Experience

This should include any work or volunteer experience you have had. You should list the name of company, City and State, job title, dates worked, what you did on the job. Always start with the most recent job first. You have written this information on Worksheet #2.

4 - Education

This should include schools you have attended starting with the school you are currently attending or last school you attended. You should list name of school, City and State, dates attended, major, degree earned. You have written this information on Worksheet #1. Do not include grammar school attended. If in college do not include high school.

5 - References

On a separate sheet list three references. See sample reference sheet on page 11. You have written this information on Worksheet #3

Review the sample resume and reference sheet on the next two pages. Using the information from Worksheets #1, #2, #3, create your resume and reference sheet. When you have finished have someone proofread them for you.

Save your resume and reference sheet as a Word Document so that it can be easily downloaded. Remember to save to an external drive so that you can always access them.

Always print your resume on quality paper. You can purchase resume paper from an office supply store. Never use copy machine paper to print the resume you are going to give an employer.

THE APPLICATION

Most companies require you to apply online. Whether you apply on line or in person, the way your application is completed will determine if you are called in for an interview.

These are the rules for completing an application.

1. If you are completing the application in person;

a. Only use black ink

b. Always print legibly

3 Always read before answering.

4 Fill in all of the blanks. If the question does not pertain to you write NA in the space which means non applicable (does not apply).

5 Have all of the information you will need. (names, addresses and phone numbers, etc.)

6 Give information in chronological order, most recent first.

7 Have your list of three references.

8 Always sign and date the application.

Complete the sample application on the following pages. Whether online or paper, you will find these questions on most applications.

Explanation Section 1

Date – always put the date you are completing the application

Position – state what job are you applying for such as, cashier, stock person, receptionist.

Previous Address – complete this if you have lived at your current address for less than 2 years.

Section 3

If you are under age 18, check with your State to find out if you need working papers. If you are not a US Citizen you must have proof of authorization to work in the US.
