Overview

Requiem for the Conqueror (Forbidden Borders Series #1) by W. Michael Gear

This rich and exciting sci-fi trilogy follows the search of one man—raised to be the ultimate general, the penultimate killing machine—for his own humanity and for the son he's never known.

The final conflict is about to begin....

The Forbidden Borders form a seemingly unassailable gravity-powered barrier, cutting humankind off from the wider universe, confining rival empires to a few star systems, and leaving them to strive endlessly against one another for total control. But now the weakest have fallen, only two mighty empires remain, and each must once again turn to the man both fear more than they fear one another. The man each is determined to hire—or, failing that, to assassinate—Staffa kar Therma, Lord Commander of the Companions.

Trained to be the ultimate killing machine, the penultimate general, Staffa has led his crack Companion mercenary troops to victory time and again. Throughout the human worlds, the Lord Commander is cursed as the Star Butcher, bringer of death and destruction. And never before has he turned his back from undertaking a new contract.

But along with his most recent victory has come a discovery that will have repercussions throughout all the star systems within the Forbidden Borders. For Staffa has learned that the son stolen from him in infancy may still be alive, and nothing will stand between Staffa and the search for his son—even though his quest may well lead to his own destruction....

Requiem for the Conqueror by W. Michael Gear I know that Michael Gear has been waiting patiently for me to get through this dramatic and inspiring encompassing story. The book encapsulates so many ideas that it takes time to go through the text and comprehend its meanings. Forbidden borders is a thought experiment in technology and mankind. If mankind were forced to face its own face its own faults and dark tenancies could mankind rise above petty greet, and destruction. Would access to technology, and distant worlds change the outcome of mankind's ultimate ulterior motives. Could a computer program figure out how to solve mankind's problems? Could mankind be forced to change for the better? Find balance to their desires and willingness to control ultimate power. Lord Commander Staffa, the Star Butcher is a construct of mankind and computer programs. If a child can be changed and manipulated to create the ultimate weapon. Could mankind find a way to change its destructive nature? What both the leaders who have changed Staffa's life dramatically, taking away his wife and child, and the computer program that created him did not expect is that he can grow beyond their formulated predictions. What they thought would destroy him, would make him stronger? His goal in life is find a way to go beyond the Forbidden Boarders. Sink is a reluctant warrior, very young and impulsive at the beginning he is a natural at war. Yet he finds that his past is left to haunt him. That the powers that be have destroyed all he loves, and wants in the world. It is his story that is the most dramatic of tales held within these pages. His search for his true nature will expose so much he does not know. Bruen has lived 300 years, he has served his people well. He has found a way to trick the Mag Comm into telling him the secrets of the world without loosing his own mind. He is old and weary from the trials of a life lived too long. It is his turn to find a solution to the ills that his predecessors inflicted on the universe.

This is a big, fat book to get lost in for a week or so. The first of a trilogy of big, fat books to get lost in. It's pure space opera, with a sweeping plot that takes in multiple planets, heroic heroes, villainous villains, and some cool SF/space western tropes. I'm surprised it doesn't have a thousand reviews, it deserves them.
