Ruthless People by J.J. McAvoy

Ruthless People #1...the book that started it all......

"One Marriage + Two Bosses = 3X the Chaos."

To the outside world, they look like American royalty, giving to charities, feeding the homeless, and rebuilding the city. But behind closed doors is a constant battle for dominance between two bosses, cultures, and hearts.

Ruthless People is a romantic crime fiction set in modern day Chicago and follows the life and marriage of Melody Giovanni and Liam Callahan - rivals by blood and leaders through fear. Theirs is an arranged marriage with the goal of ending years of bloodshed between the Irish and the Italians. Liam assumes he's getting a simple-minded wife, one he can control, one who bends to his every need...he'll soon find out that his wife to be does not fit that mold.

Melody knows exactly what type of man Liam is and would rather die than give up the power she has spent her life earning.

The mafia of the past has evolved, and with rival bosses gunning for their family, Melody and Liam will have to learn to work as one to take down those who stand in their way.

I loved Ruthless People. This is the best mafia romance I've read so far. Liam and Melody are amazing. I love Melody she's my favorite character. Liam the boss of the Irish mob meets the beautiful and, amazing Melody the boss of the Italian mob. I liked how Liam expected her to be a doormat but she surprised and impressed him. Liam and Melody were perfect together after they got over their trust issues. Killing anybody who gets in their way because nobody messes with the Callahans.

I love this book!! It has been awhile that I have come across a book that kept me turning the page and this one surely did!! It's incredible,  it has everything you would want in a crime family book!!! Awsome quotes,  right up there with leave the gun and take the cannoli!! Rule one: You kill for family.  You die for family.  Because you can't trust anyone else Rule two: Take no prisoners and have no regret Rule three: Just because you sell drugs for a living isn't an excuse not to dress well Rule four: No bloody divorce It really is a book filled with awesomeness!!!!!

A FREAKING ROLLERCOASTER, but a PERFECT one (you’ve been warned) This book series messed with my emotions!! I’m not even kidding, I found it hard to function once i was finished. I’ve been hangover (from reading books, of course) but, never to this extent that my mind is occupied day and night with the characters. MY BREATH HAS BEEN TAKEN AWAY, HELP!!!! Look at how far Melody has gotten into between the first and the last book. who knew she’d go from this “cold” person to be the caring, loving women that would give her life for her family? I’m not much of a crier, but I’ve got to admit I had tears in my eyes by the 4th book (A bloody Kingdom)…what an effing plot twist..i refused for it to end that way, and thankfully it hasn’t. I was NOT disappointed. For characters; Liam Alec Callahan has become one of my many book boyfriends (I’ll be doomed once Melody discovers this. RIP me) Melody Nicci Giovanni Callahan The most badass female character I have ever read!! hands down. This couple of “Melody X Liam“. The Italian beautiful queen and boss of the Italian mafia and Ceann na Conairte, the devilish handsome boss of the Irish one. They’re the definition of power couple. I could go on and on talking about these two, but i seriously don’t want to spoil y’all because believe me..this story worth your time! Every. Single. Second & Minute!!!! J J McAvoy, THANK YOU dearly for such a beautiful series, and looking forward the “Children of Vice” series. would I recommend it? HELL to the YES! ** https://bookishheaven.wordpress.com/2017/03/06/reviewing-ruthless-people-j-j-mcavoy/ **

If you're into dark erotica, this one is for you. Not my bag, is the only reason I gave it four stars instead of five. Not as much sex as the violence, wow, more blood then orgasams!

Really enjoyed this "take no prisoners", "make no excuses" mafia romance by J. J. McAvoy. I honestly don't think I've ever read a book with such a strong alpha female heroine. She met her match in her equally strong alpha male prearranged mafia husband though. I really like how she takes him down a peg or two at the beginning and is always surprising him. He comes to not only love her, but admire and respect her strength/family loyalty. A great book to start a great series. She's like the "Jack Bauer" of the TV series "24"...only a female living on the dark, criminal side. WARNING: It does contact graphic mafia violence

The plot is clever, the writing is not up to par. Seems like the author is reaching.

Loved the story, and can't wait to get to the second. Warning, really dark and disturbing torture. These characters are crazy, scary, but i love them, and that sort of frightens myself! There were a lot of mispelled words or wrong words used, but still worth the $ and the time.

I don't think the reviewers understand this book. It would make a great dark comedy. I hope the Coen brothers read it. Can't wait to read the next one!

When I first heard of this book, I knew I wanted to read it and I knew it was going to be really good.  Have you ever had those, I want it right now moments?  Well I had one of those, but the book wasn't even published yet. So when it was released, I bought it right away, but life and the blog got in my way of reading it.  I can't believe I've waited so long to read this book. This book is epic! So the warnings in the synopsis are all true. Many of the events in this book are not for the faint of heart. I take that back, most of this book is that way.  I've always considered myself as someone who has a good grasp on what's right and wrong, almost to the point of everything being black or white, with very little grey.  I know life doesn't work that way, but usually the good guys are the cops and the bad guys are the mafioso. I think a great book is one that can take your views and opinions and manager to make you see them differently. I was completely surprised to find my allegiances distorted from what they normally are and to find out blood thirsty I can be.   Liam and Melody are the heads of their crime families.  They've been warring for generations and now the time has come for the two families to be joined by their marriage. The only problem is neither can trust the other or give an inch when it comes to sharing control, making for some very interesting reading.  I loved the book was told from both their points of view, as well as chapters here and there from the other Callahan and Giovanni family members.  It made it so much easier to understand their motivations and get to know them.  I actually felt sympathetic towards them as opposed to being horrified. There were a few moments when I was nothing but horrified and disgusted, but they were able to rationally explain the reasoning behind their cruelty.   I read this book in a single sitting.  I could not stop reading.  Even when my mind was telling me it was time to sleep, I couldn't do it.  I had to know what Liam and Melody would do once they'd been attacked on all fronts.  It was both exhilarating and terrifying.  I loved seeing Melody and Liam spar and figure out their relationship beyond the confines of being mafia bosses and spouses.  Those two are a match made in mafia heaven.  Melody is truly "Bloody Melody" and horrifying.  I was more afraid of her than I was Liam.   J.J. McAvoy writes with such aplomb, it's hard to believe this is her debut novel.  She had me devouring the pages and always on edge.  There is no limit to the twists this story took, and each one blew my mind.  I have a feeling The Untouchables, the next book in this saga, will contain as many if not more amazing revelations. Saying I'm eager to read this would be an understatement.  I may have waited months to read this book, but I won't make the same mistake twice.  I'm expecting great things from J.J. McAvoy.

So, I’ve been trying to write a review for Ruthless People for the longest time. The only thing that comes to mind right now is Holy Shift. I bought this one on a whim when I saw a post on Facebook of a reviewer raving about it. She was saying how different and how addicting the book was. I wish I remembered who it was because she was right!!! This book was not what I was expecting at all. The main character Mel is kind of scary. No never mind that; she was terrifying! I’m not used to being intimidated by female main characters. I was little taken aback. This girl did not play. Which it’s understandable since she is a mafia boss and needs to prove herself to her crew just because she’s a female. I got to see a softer side of her in some parts of the book, but I wasn’t fooled. Her nature was to be cruel and ruthless. I can’t say if I liked her or not. I was surprised by the things she did, and she was definitely not a relatable character, but I did appreciate her attitude and how she knew she was the best at what she did. Liam was a little bit predictable, and a little be softer than Mel. He still did terrible things, but he balanced the book. I definitely loved the way Mel and Liam clashed and the things they did to each other were borderline sadistic but you could feel the sexual tension sizzling between them. It didn’t hurt that they both had the same goal, which was to rule the world. The secondary characters were more likable they weren't as mean-spirited as our two main characters, and they had a heart. Something happened with one of Liam’s brother that actually pissed me off so much I had to put the book down for a few minutes to remind myself that this was just a book. It was kind of hard to remember that the people in the book were fictional because everything felt so real that’s one of the things I loved the most about Ruthless People. I don’t know how most people will feel about this book. I was pretty much reading a book told by the villains' POV. I thought it was refreshing, and it made me feel all kinds of weird, but I loved it.
