Love the characters and the story. My one complaint is how sudden the conflict resolves it just ends. No details no follow up just over.

It was well done. Good new adult book.

This is one of the worst writings that I have ever read. If I could I would demand a refund. I couldn't even make it through the first few chapters before throwing it down in disgust.

Alek, immortal son of the Furies, was tasked to recapture the creatures that escaped Tartarus and ventured into the Mortal Realm. He is helped by Eva Kostas, the new Oracle. This new adult fantasy takes place in Tartarus and Tulsa. Let me preface this review with, when I started reading the book, I did not realize it was the second book in the series. I could follow the story with no problem, but it is possible I would have enjoyed it more if I read the Book one, Amber Smoke, first. I liked the characters. Eva recently learned that she is the new Oracle and is still discovering her powers. She deals with a lot in a short amount of time. Alex is brave and determined. The two have good chemistry. I like that detective James Graham follows his instincts and helps Eva and Alex. Bridget is an excellent friend. The characters are believable and well developed. There were a few times that the story did not hold my interests, and I found myself skimming. I love Greek mythology, so I am always interested contemporary stories base on the myths. Kristin Cast does a good job of incorporating the old with the new. Complimentary copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Scarlet Rain by Kristin Cast is the 2nd book in her The Escaped series. This series is a blend of fantasy and mythology revolving around the Mortal Realm (human kind) and the underground (hell or in this case Tartarus). In Amber Smoke, we met Alek, the immortal warrior born to the three Furies who protect those in the Mortal Realm, by overseeing the demons locked in Tartarous. Alek was trained to bring back any one who escapes, to protect the humans, and keep Tartarus safe. We also met Eva, a human who is destined to become the Oracle. In Scarlet Rain, terrible demons, The Nosoi, have escaped Tartarus, and humans are being infected by the diseases they are unleashing. Alek ,who is still recovering from injuries, is sent back to help Eva; as she is still trying to learn how to use her new found powers. In this mix, is Eva’s best friend, Bridgit and James, the detective who can’t believe what he is seeing. Together they will try to stop the pandemic and force The Nosoi back to Tartarus. There is a slow built romance between Alek and Eva, as they work together to stop this evil. I liked Eva, but felt that Alek was not what I would expect of an immortal warrior. This story has a good theme, with good characters and villains.

I was fortunate enough to get this book a few days early, and it was so good that I finished it within a day. From the very first page I was hooked on the story, which itself was extremely fast-paced and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The characters are refreshingly life-like and relatable, something that is extremely hard to find in novels these days. I felt an instant connection with the characters, and that helped to truly draw me into the events that each was experiencing. With every tear shed, either from laughter or sorrow, you feel like you a part of what is going on. It is worth noting that along with the maturing of the characters there is also a maturing in the writing style. Ms. Cast is in true form in this novel and her writing simply shines; people and places are described in wondrous detail and breathed life through her words. In the span of one novel she has grown considerably as a writer, and the more adult themes this book contains reflect that change. The grisly detail with which she describes some of the more violent scenes in the book are reminiscent of something you would find in a Stephen King novel - incredibly lifelike, so much so that at times you might find yourself cringing along with the characters. Likewise, when one of the book's more scandalous scenes transpires, you might find yourself getting a bit hot under the collar. She is a master storyteller and the scenes laid out in the book reflect that. The excellent usage of Greek mythology woven into the modern-day town of Tulsa continues to craft a unique world that no other book quite comes close to creating, and I am so looking forward to where Eva, Alek, Bridget, and James (and my newest favorite character PJ!) are taken next!
