Storyline is thin, but has an interesting premise. Good beach read.

Secretarial Wars is like the movie 9 to 5 without all the bouncing-boob jokes and hog-tied silliness. Three D.C. secretaries conjure up their romantic fantasies as they jockey for respect from their prune-faced boss-ladies. Linda Gould's first novel is a quietly professional work of fiction overlaying the workings of a White House administration that leaves a bit to be desired, just like our (unfortunately) non-fictional leadership. The storyline includes many unexpected side-trips into the heated rivalry between two Redskin quarterbacks and the muckraking of a self-proclaimed journalist. Is it a political scandal, or just three girls with their pants inappropriately on fire? By the time the whole plot blows up in her face, even the narrator isn't so sure what actually happened. Secretarial Wars is a fine first effort from an author who seems to be openly familiar with her territory. The girls are back in town!

I am deeply appreciative of how the protagonist seemed to have like a million thoughts running through her head every second of every day. So often books only mention the actions taken by characters and their thoughts on these actions and nothing more, when really no one processes life in such a simple way. Most of all the book made me think about the fact that we live in a culture where we are constantly encouraged to pursue our dreams but how often unless we know at least one person who has gone through more or less the same thing and can guide us through the process we are lost as to how to even start tackling the matter. Moreover, this book is a great asset for writers to have as it takes character development to a whole new, and important, level.
