Seven Disciplines of a Leader is a complete look at what it takes to be a strong, well rounded leader. The book covers and teaches the seven disciplines, such as how to go about planning, how to collaborate, building the right relationships and attitudes with your team, etc, but also covers much more than that. The author touches on many of the specific things a leader may run into, such as how to lead a multigenerational workplace or how to balance your work and personal life. I appreciated that the author takes on both the overarching ideas but also wrote about these more specific situations a leader can encounter. Wolf really grounds his advice with short examples of his or other’s experiences. I like that the advice is all useable and straight forward, this is not a book of catch phrases but of ideas and approaches that you can quickly put to use. I think that this is a great book for anyone looking for ideas on a comprehensive approach to leading, if you are starting out in a new position or looking for more effective practices. I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
When I first started reading this book I didn't really think that I would be able to relate to the book very well as I am currently not working in the public workforce. Prior to being a stay at home mom I worked as a teacher. To my surprise I could very easily relate to this book. One part of the book that really resonated with me was the section titled, "What's Wrong with Being Right?" Some powerful words really hit it home for me, "Instead of seeking perfection, aim for excellence." Also in this section Wolf talks about preparing yourself for mistakes, that yes, as a leader you need to be on top of your game, but you are human and you will make mistakes. I feel like these are not just words needed in the work place but great life lessons as well! I really liked how the book was laid out! It is very well organized and flows well. I like how Wolf uses examples of what he is trying to preach. He gives you advice, "What's Wrong with Being Right?" and then gives you an example of how that advice is put into play, "Zoe Learns an Important Lesson from Her Boss, Stan." I also really liked the little snip its that Wolf included in each chapter. For example, "Hands-On Advice: Avoid negativity." Overall, I thought this book was great and that anyone who reads it will be able to pull out some solid advice and life lessons! I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

In addition to gaining beneficial proficiencies from Wolf’s new book, you will simultaneously give back to veterans. Unlike other management books, what I like about Seven Disciplines of a Leader is that Jeff has written about those disciplines which are timeless. It’s not about ego-filled executives who had a successful two year run – it’s about what makes for long-term, durable success. Books like this are rare. If you even go back just two years and see what management book writers were saying back then, it will be dated. Jeff's book will stand as a guide for the long-term, which is what management is truly about.
In my 25 years as a trainer and coach to hundreds of leaders in industry, I wish I’d had Jeff Wolf’s book to give to those clients. He lays out a practical, sensible, and eminently “do-able” series of behaviors and disciplines to build your own leadership effectiveness. He has taken his own vast experience as a CEO and top thought leader, and winnowed that knowledge into a must-have guide for anyone striving to lead their organization to the next level. Mr. Jeff Wolf guides you through the application of each discipline as a real life mentor would. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to enhance their personal leadership skills, no matter their position or workplace environment.
