Overview

High school junior, Kylie Bates, can suddenly read minds. When she touches people's hands, she's able to see their deepest thoughts. As if that's not freaky enough, her dad sends her to help hottie detective, Sam Williams, track down a missing girl. Way too much pressure, especially for a girl who can't watch Scream without getting nightmares.

Then, finding the missing girl leads to much more than Kylie's prepared for. Like discovering that her dad has been lying to her. That she has a family she never knew about. That the girls have powers similar to hers. Oh yeah, and that someone is out to get her.

When the detective's teenage wanna-be-cop cousin, Trip Williams, approaches Kylie at school insisting she help him solve the case, she discovers Trip might be the only one she can trust, and the only one to help her unravel the secrets behind her mysterious gift.

This is the first novel I have read by Susan Hatler, and it was such a delight. This is the first book in the Mindreader Series. It was fast-paced and thrilling, and I am really looking forward to reading more. The main character, Kylie Bates is your typical high school student, trying to fit in, crushing on a guy, and kind of insecure. All of the sudden she discovers she has the ability to read minds. Her snarky personality and hilarious inner dialogue makes for some very entertaining moments, even in intense situations. After discovering her ability and talking to her dad about it, an incident arises where her dad wants her to go to the police station to work with hottie detective Sam Williams to find a missing girl. It turns out that the hottie detective has an even hotter cousin, who just happens to be Kylie's age. Trip, the hotter hottie, works part-time at the station and is a want-to-be assistant detective. He gets involved with the missing girl's case and Kylie, and things begin to get really interesting. Trip is totally swoon worthy, and romance between the two ensues. They also have a really steamy first kiss. Kylie discovers that a lot of what she has been told about her life, her mother, her father, and her relatives has been a lie, and tries to discover why so many things have been kept from her. She also discovers more about her power, and finds that she is not the only one with an ability. Shaken is a fast-paced combination of action, drama, and romance that will keep you in suspense, and keep you turning the page dying to see what happens next. Susan Hatler has done an excellent job writing the characters, they are so believable and fun to get to know, and the story line is great. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to reading more in this action-packed series.

I absolutely loved this author's ability to create a young, fun heroine in Kylie while at the same time providing mystery and a hint of romance. This story deals with all of life's "biggies"--family, identity, love, and adventure, in a fresh and exciting way.

This book was very cute and very well written. It is a book for all ages, not just young adults. This story is about Kylie who thinks she is a normal teenager living with her dad. Kylie finds out she has mind reading abilities one day when a stranger comes knocking at her door. This is where Kylie's adventure begins. Kylie is asked to work with the local police and assistant detective Trip, on finding Amanda, a kidnapping victim by using her abilities. Kylie not only helps find Amanda but also finds long lost relatives she had no idea she had. While working with the police to catch the kidnappers, Kylie realizes she really likes Trip but doesn't know if the feelings are mutual. When Kylie comes face to face with the man behind the kidnappings, her world is turned upside down finding out that not only is that man her real dad but he has been looking for her. In this first book, the story is about Kylie getting her abilities and finding out about the kidnapping. You don't find out too much information about her mother and where these abilities come from or why her mother ran away from her real father. This book leaves you with a lot of unanswered questions. I am hoping that you find out more in the next book. I will definitely continue to read.

I really enjoyed this book. The ending was so good I think Kylie should've been less insecure though and have some back bone. But trip is a really good character!!!<3 I'm wondering when the next book is coming out in the MIND READER SERIES

Lies and secrets When I downloaded the arc on this one I did not realize that I picked it up in 2017 that was before I really did many reviews. As I was re-reading it I remember how much I enjoyed it the first time I read it. It is a story about a young woman with a gift. There are lies that surrounding her. It is such a good book with interesting characters and an awesome storyline. I highly recommend this paranormal it is just a wonderful book.

What a rush! This is a very fast paced read that is action packed. Kylie is a relatable, snarky teenager that has your normal teenager struggles; that is until she starts to read minds. This is a very intriguing start to this YA series and I cannot wait to read book 2. I am voluntarily leaving a honest, unbiased review.

I need to know more! When I started reading this book, my first thought was “what have I gotten myself into?” And not in a good way. Kylie managed to hit every button I have to irritate me, and I couldn’t see anything sympathetic about her. But I kept reading. And then something magical happened. I got sucked into her world. I became just as curious about what was going on, where her powers came from, as Kylie was, and I couldn’t devour the story fast enough. I needed answers. This story leaves a lot of questions unanswered and now I’m dying to get my hands on the next book. I received a complimentary copy of this book through Booksprout.

Thrilling new young adult series! Kylie thinks she is just every other girl trying to steal the attention of her number one crush, maintain her 4.0, and be the best best friend possible. These seem like such mundane desires when her life begins spinning out of control, and she discovered she if far from normal. Kyle has the ability to see what others are thinking by merely touching. This was a complete mystery until a very disturbing incident with what she thought to be a door to door salesman. Now she is being pushed to find a missing girl, and the lies and betrayals are getting deep. With more than any young girl should face Kylie must uncover this mystery before it cost her her own life. This was an exceptional novel, and debut for this series. I was honestly questionable about the book after the first couple chapters, but questions pressed me forward and the book seemed to take off. This mysterious story of families with special abilities is not unqiue to the genre, but the storyline and build up was incredible for offer a fresh read. Kylie is a strong and genuine character that has found herself in a mess. This is not your typical girl that is running around not using her head, but an incredibly intelleigent and witty character that just happens to be in a mess. This storp had many experiences that offered a different outlook to the same old story, and I was intrigued by the innocence displayed. I loved Kylie's father from the start; the honesty of their relationship is refreshing. Where as many novels recently are built around lies and secrets between child and parent that was not the case in this story. Kylie did not hesitate to open up and tell her father about her abilities. I know that as the story continues this is not totally the case, but it was honestly a very great approach for this relationship. I hope that as the story continues this relationship will mend and grow. Susan offered such an incredible list of characters, but I was throughly impressed with the relationship between Trip and Kylie. This was not your typical boy meets girl BAM! their in love. Suan built and shaped this relationship with confidence through interactions and support between the two characters. The result was a romance of intensity and emotion that readers will feel through the pages. Talk about an incredible start for this series, and I absolutely can not wait to see where this will go. So many questions left unanswered and issues left unresolved promise action packed sequels to come. This is a BOOKWHISPERER RECOMMENDATION!!! --

Title: Shaken - Mind Reader Series Book 1 Author: Susan Hatler Published: 2-2-2012 Publisher: Hatco Publishing Pages: 237 Genre: Romance Sub Genre: Teen & Young Adult; Paranormal & Fantasy; Clean & Wholesome ISBN: 13: 9781470115029 ASIN: B0075GM0P0 Reviewer: DelAnne Reviewed For: NetGalley Rating: 4.5 Stars I received a copy of "Shaken" from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review. Publisher's Description: High school junior, Kylie Bates, can suddenly read minds. When she touches people’s hands, she’s able to see their deepest thoughts. As if that’s not freaky enough, her dad sends her to help hottie detective, Sam Williams, track down a missing girl. Way too much pressure, especially for a girl who can’t watch Scream without getting nightmares. Then, finding the missing girl leads to much more than Kylie’s prepared for. When the detective’s teenage wanna-be-cop cousin, Trip Williams, approaches Kylie at school insisting she help him solve the case, she discovers Trip might be the only one she can trust, and the only one to help her unravel the secrets behind her mysterious gift. My Review: Wake up and get ready for school, have some cereal and write in your diary. A typical day for Kylie until she answers the door and find herself shaking his hand and her world turns upside down. Shaken is novel of Kylie coming to terms with her new ability, wondering who she can trust, and finding a family she never heard of before. My choice and Kylie's are similar, hide in our room and freak out. Although she is a bit more together than I, she gets up and goes on to school. Filled with interesting characters, an unusual plot and lots of humor, Shaken will pull you in from the first page to the last. Kylie's behavior is that of a typical teenager who lives in a world or Drama and everything is in the moment. Trying to keep up with her thoughts and those of those she comes in contact with will keep you busy. Why has this started now? Why is her family so push in getting to her? How did she not know of them and te abilities that run in her family? Fast paced with a well laid out plot make "Shaken" a must read. My one draw back is that the speed at which Kylie's physical attractions take place. There seems to be no one who has explained it is not wise to act on all impulses. That is not an attitude encouraged in my home, nor would I want it to be. Slow down child, the world and boys will wait for you to finish growing up. My rating for "Shaken was 4.5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the best YA romances I've ever read. Actually, it's got enough edge-of-your-chair moments to be called suspense. In any case, I LOVED it!
