Overview

Sitting Kills, Moving Heals: How Everyday Movement Will Prevent Pain, Illness, and Early Death - and Exercise Alone Won't by Joan Vernikos

This groundbreaking new medical work demonstrates how modern sedentary lifestyles contribute to poor health, obesity, and diabetes, and how health can be dramatically improved by continuous, low-intensity, movement that challenges the force of gravity. Citing her original NASA research on how weightlessness weakens astronauts' muscles, bones, and overall health, the author presents a simple and effective plan for maintaining good health throughout life by developing new lifestyle habits of frequent gravity-challenging movement. Written for everyone who spends most of their lives sitting in chairs, at desks, and in cars, this practical, easy-to-follow action plan outlines simple gravity-challenging activities such as standing up frequently, stretching, walking, and dancing that are more healthful and effective than conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Joan Vernikos "Dr. Joan" has once again produced an easy to understand, common sense, helpful book with the aim of keeping us healthy. Sitting Kills Moving Heals advances Dr Joan's commitment to bring the wisdom of the sometimes complicated science of gravity and motion to people like you and me. Although she cites authority for the scientific foundation, she writes in a clear understandable manner that encourages us to incorporate as much physical movement as possible into our daily routines. Dr Joan offers realistic ways to avoid unnecessary pain, illness and early death. If you have not read one of Dr. Joan's earlier books, heard her speak or subscribed to her blog, get ready to be swept away by her commitment to help all of us attain a better quality of life.

As a long time RN no longer working and wanting to stay healthy, Dr. Joan's book brings clarity and simplicity to what I need to do in order to keep the health I have and increase it if I take all of her advice. This is a book that anyone can understand and is appropriate for any age. It is never too young to start forming good, healthy habits in fact, according to Dr. Joan, the sooner the better. Children do so much of this naturally. It has been years since I've jumped rope but maybe I will try it again. I love that I can get healthier without going to a gym, that I can fit it into my day, every day! This is a great gift for someone you love and want to be healthy. I'd never thought of gravity as "my friend" until I read The G-Factor by Dr. Vernikos. I always thought about it pulling things (neck, cheeks, hips, etc.) down but now I know how to use it for my benefit! Amazing. jjagb, R.N.

Dr. Joan has drawn on her pioneering bed rest investigations with NASA to write a book to help all of us better understand (i) why activity is important and (ii) what we need to do to stay healthy for longer. There is something in this book for everyone. It provides an informative and easy-to-understand summary of the scientific evidence that will be of interest to the general public while showing the importance of gravity to the curious scientist. Having been presented with this information the reader is anxious to know what needs to be done to prevent the negative consequences of inactivity. In part two of the book Dr. Joan presents a series of easy to follow activities that can be implemented by everyone in their daily lives without requiring specialist equipment or facilities. Dr. Joan has one of the best scientific minds I have come across and is passionate and knowledgeable about physical activity. She would convince a bear that hibernation was not important!! This book is a must-read for everyone who wants to live healthy for longer. Dr. Donal O'Gorman. Director, Centre for Preventive Medicine, Dublin City University
