Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling Series #1) by Nalini Singh

THE FIRST PSY/CHANGELING NOVEL from the New York Times bestselling author of Shards of Hope, Shield of Winter, and Heart of Obsidian...
The book that Christine Feehan called "a must-read for all of my fans."
In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of “rehabilitation”—the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was…Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a Changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several Changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion—and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities—or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation…

Animal Instincts

She was tall but there was nothing willowy about her. The woman’s body had more dangerous curves than should be legal on one of her race. In spite of the black pantsuit and stiff white shirt she wore like corporate armor, he could tell her breasts would overflow his hands. When she bent to examine something on the ground, he almost gave in to the urging of his beast. The curve of her hip was sensually female, her bottom a heart-shaped enticement.

Her head turned as if in response to his intent gaze, and despite the distance separating them, he could almost taste the earthy sensuality she’d tried to bury. Frowning at his own thoughts, he began to walk toward her. The Psy weren’t sensual. They were about as close to mechanical as you could get and still remain human. But there was something different about this one, something he wanted to sink his teeth into…;

Sascha Duncan is a member of a race known for their emotional detachment, cold precision and deadly sharp minds. Only Sascha isn't like other Psy. She feels powerful emotion and she grows worried she may soon not be able to repress the building surge. A business meeting with changeling Lucas Hunter, the alpha of the DarkRiver leopards, lures her even closer to the edge of certain discovery. As she is assigned as the Psy contact for the ensuing project Lucas's company takes on, she soon begins to fear grave repercussions from her people. Lucas feels something different about Sascha--she's not like other Psy. It doesn't take long for the dominant male to begin asserting his blatant interest in her in traditionally pack ways. Could her mysterious differences be the key his and a rival pack's have been looking for? A serial killer has targeted changeling women, and the packs believe the killer to be Psy. As a Psy with connections amongst her race, Sascha will become the only saving grace in a race against time to stop two opposing groups on the brink of war. Her and Lucas's efforts will bring them to some shocking realizations as well as some heated and sensually stimulating encounters. The first impression of this romance was that it combined an awesome feel of not only paranormal elements, but sci-fi as well. Lucas's pack dynamics will ring somewhat similar to other paranormal romances, while having their own unique qualities at the same time, most notably their love for one another and family dynamics. The chilling addition of the Psy brings to mind a more futuristic sense with their sparse and utilitarian lifestyles. There are some very interesting twists to the plot that makes good use of the pacing throughout the book, making for a very hard to put down read. Sascha is a heroine readers may sympathize with in her plight to become fully herself, while Lucas is so wonderfully sexy in his concern for her welfare. Look for the sequel, Visions of Heat (March 6, 2007) about Psy member Faith NightStar and changeling Vaugn D'Angelo.

Picked up the series last week. Signh had been on my list of authors to check out. I was looking for something to read until other titles came out. From the first page i was hooked. Ms Signh did not take a twist on an existing idea. She created a complex, rich, intriguing world. The depth and richness of the world she created is breathtaking and heartbreaking. I have not been so completely captivated in the first pages since I first read Laurell K Hamilton. One of the defining characteristics of a great author/book is not just that you like the book, it is that you loose yourself, fall into the pages and when you can manage to put the book down, the characters still live on in your head. I managed to read the Psy/Changeling series in less than a week. I can not wait for the next installment in November

I started reading Nalini Singh with the Guild Hunter books. I really enjoyed those, so I got this one to see if the Psy-Changling books are as good. THEY ARE! The characters are will developed and likable. I really cared about what happened to them and I will read the rest of this series as soon as I get them.

After reading many positive reviews about this series from various sites, I finally decided to give this author (new to me) a try. Wow! I totally loved everything about this book. I like that the plot is layered and complex and just fun and interesting. I love how very interesting Psy and Changelings are. Many characters were introduced that I'm hopeful will show up in future books. This is my kind of series! I can't wait to get started on the next one.

Really enjoyed this book. I recommend the whole series. I stumbled upon this series with a novella in anthology and loved it, so I had to get my hands on the whole series. This is the first book in the series, there are 10 books released for this series to date. All are really good.

This was recommended by an employee at Barnes and Noble and boy am I grateful. I loved this book - so much so I had to run out and get the 2nd one as soon as I could. The conflict between the way of the Psy and the changelings was riveting and turbulent. Sascha's character was strong and I enjoyed learning about how the Psy operates through her. Lucas was defiantly the perfect match for her. I enjoyed the dynamic of the pack and liked the differences between the wolves and the leopards. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading it all again in the future.

this author has made it on to my buy list not my check it out at the library list, and i am very picky about what i will make a full time resident of my shelf. The characters and the world were unique and realistic,I am so glad that this looks to be a series. i was skeptical when i picked it up and made myself give it at least five pages, with all the copying authors do of worlds filled with shape changers and phychics i was delighted to find a new spin that didn't sink to being cheesy and overly drama queen. i am waiting impatiently for the next book!

Imagine my surprise when I realized that while I'd read Slave to Sensation a few years back, I hadn't reviewed it yet. What a shame because the book is like Magic so when I realized that Slave to Sensation got a new look via a brand new cover design, I thought it the perfect time to re-read an oldie but a goodie and share my thoughts. Read through number 2 did not disappoint. There is just something about a Singh book that captures the readers attention so fiercely and doesn't let go. I knew where the story was going from the get go but I still couldn't stop turning the pages. Sascha Duncan and Lucas Hunter are our couple of interest in the first Psy-Changling installment. Sascha is Psy but she is flawed, unable to be truly silent as she is expected to be and she fears that if her secret comes out, if her race realizes that her silence isn't as perfect as she leads on, that she'll be sent to rehabilitation and lose the very core of who she is. When she's placed in the middle of a joint Psy-Changling business venture, her entire world opens up to new and terrifying possibilities. She comes face to face with the Leopard Alpha, Lucas Hunter and the two of them work hand in hand to find a serial killer who is targeting Changling women. The two create a dynamic and sensual pair. The sexual tension between the two is tantalizing and you cant help but eagerly anticipate where their relationship will go. It was exciting to watch their relationship unfold once more and to experience the twists and turns that Nalini so expertly places throughout the story. If you haven't read the Psy-Changling series yet, you absolutely must. Slave to Sensation is an exciting adventure filled with the perfect amount of sexual steam to keep you craving more.

The nice thing about this book is that it had an actual story line that didnt revolve around sex. Yes it does have it but it doesnt consume the whole story.

I was a little skeptical when I started this book because it is written in the future. The plot was totally different than any I have ever read before. I absolutely loved this book! I was hooked from the beginning. The characters are unique, sexy, and intriguing. The love story is well told from beginning to end. The series starts with a bang and continues on, each book just as good as the next. I have fallen in love with this author and plan on reading all of her books! I would recommend that you go out and buy the 2nd and 3rd books in this series before you read #1 because when you are finished, you will definitely want them! This author is a New York Times Bestseling Author for a reason!

Slave to Sensation is the first in Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series. This is a world where emotions are negated. Any sign of emotion are punished by the ruling Psy and this is the story of Sascha and Lucas. Sascha is Psy and Lucas is a Changeling, almost the opposite of Psy. Being both human and animal, Lucas' craves the very sensations the Psy abhor. And Sascha has begun to feel emotion and is concealing that weakness from the Psy. These two races are on the verge of war because Psy women have been murdered and the Psy think these savage deaths could only come from a Changeling. Lucas is searching for the killer of his packmate and Sascha can help him. On the hunt, he realizes that Sascha isn't as cold and unfeeling as is expected for a Psy. And while Sascha attempts to hide her feelings, she is as fascinated with Lucas as he is with her. They'll fight to keep the status quo, but sometimes its not enough. A wonderful read and the beginning of one of the best series I've read to date. Nalini's world building is complete with strong characters, both good and bad. It's a roller coaster ride and it gets better and better.

This book is captivating! The author has created a world that is so intriguing with its mixture of evolved races. As the story progresses, not only did I become invested in the characters, but the plot and the details of each culture were constantly growing and I was eager to know more. The world the author has created is incredibly complex, but I was never lost. The story has twists and turns at every angle and yet, it’s a clear path so you don’t get tangled in a messy web. The idea of the Psy and Changelings in one society is not something I would have put together and it creates a fresh and unique view, and setting for a story. The characters in this book are absolutely fascinating. I’m sure much of that is bred form their unique races, but even more as individuals. Each person is their own star among the cast, they aren’t grouped together, letting us get to know their different personalities. Sascha and Lucas are both complex characters, with so much depth and background. They are so well developed, I could have sworn they were real people in my everyday life. Their relationship and reactions to each other, both physically and emotionally, are such a huge dynamic in the story. The chemistry leaps right off the page, not only in their attraction, but in the basic sparks between their personalities, their verbal sparring is cute. I could read a whole series about these two. However, what’s truly impressive, is that the author has brought all of those other characters to life and now, I can’t wait to read their stories! I highly, highly recommend this book and if the following books are anywhere near as good, I’m sure I’ll be encouraging you to read those two! 5 Rainbow Stars!

This is a story that just gets better every re-read. The author has a way of making the non-human characters actually feel and act non-human without just making that an excuse for bad behavior. I love seeing shifters that don't regard the change as a painful, if necessary curse. Reading psychics for whom telepathy does not provide an equalizing influence is also interesting. If that wasn't enough, there are sweet, sexy, beautiful and complex characters. Love scenes hot enough to set the pages on fire. Intrigue and betrayal. Surprisingly big question about the nature of love, trust and family.

I was enthralled with the concept behind this novel.  The species that we get to know definitely sparked my interest, as did the way that they come together and separate.  Singh develops her world and characters gradually but fully.  I enjoyed getting to know the Psy just as much as the Changelings.  I appreciated how unique each species was and how intricate the story and history surrounding them was.  The contrast between the beliefs and personalities of the different species also stood out quite shockingly. Not only does Singh allow her readers to get up close & personal with the world she’s created & the species that live there, she has created some characters that will stay with you for the long haul.  I loved getting to know the main couple.  The chemistry between them is topped only by their selflessness when it comes to one another.  Not only are the characters well developed but they’re the type of people that you instinctively want to get to know better.  The discoveries that they make about themselves and the world around them makes them even more endearing.  Don’t get me wrong.  The Changelings are the ultimate Alphas, but they haven’t lost their humanity through it all.   Singh creates a world that you want to get lost in, using it as a backdrop for this fast paced, hot & suspenseful story.  I’ll definitely be avidly continuing with this series.  I can’t wait to see what happens next. Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

This was the first Nalini Singh novel I had ever seen. I picked it up at the library and I was hooked.  I have all the others in this series and have read each of them many time.  You find something new each time. I can't quite get into the guild but I love the rock series also.  I can't wait for Aden's story.  we only have a used book store here  (It's awesome) so most of her books have to be ordered (unless wall-mart happens to have one).  It's worth the shipping.
