Overview

The year is 0039 according to the new calendar of the North American superstate. The President, now in his 10th term, has not been seen for years. But he still responds to his email from time to time. Meanwhile, rebellions rage in parts of the country, and new foreign wars are brewing. The U.S. Department of Internal Security - wielding power in the President's absence - is desperately trying to find the President before rebels or rival factions within the government can. In this world full of bureaucrats and sheep, agents and spies, rebels and soldiers, criminals, protesters, and prisoners, most citizens are completely unaware of the power struggle that is unfolding in the nation's capital and on the battlefields in the countryside thanks to the efforts of the U.S. Department of Free Speech.Set in the near future, the events of "Slow Boil Rising" unfold when a recently captured rebel soldier asks a forbidden question - exposing a plot against the President.Dystopian science fiction meets satire and comedy in "Slow Boil Rising," the first novel in a new series by D.T.E. Madden.

About the Author

D.T.E. Madden is a lawyer by training and a writer by trade. He's a story teller, a gardener, a brewer, and a fisherman by passion.

Madden first started what would later grow into his first full-length novel, "Slow Boil Rising," in 2002. Two short stories, "The Trial of Reginald Bowperson" and "A Well Organized Protest" formed the backbone of the fictional universe for "Slow Boil Rising" and the world it occupies in the year 0039.

The stories grew while Madden attended law school at Washington University in St. Louis and needed a distraction. By early 2009, "Slow Boil Rising" was a 40,000-word manuscript. There it stayed for years - six years, to be exact.

Madden put in the archives for six years - only editing sporadically but mulling over the plot almost daily. One day in early 2015, he put the finishing touches on his mental outline and grew "Slow Boil Rising" into the 90,000-word novel it stands at today.

The mental outline - and some of the actual keystrokes - are already in place for a sequel.

His wonderful wife, Youngeun, deserves a Sainthood for tolerating his prolonged periods of clacking away on the keyboard in his basement office.
