SOFTWARE ASSET MANAGEMENT: What Is It and Why Do I Need It? Chapter 13: Optimizing Contracts, Maintenance and Demand
Optimization in a SAM context means solving a problem or situation within defined parameters in such a way as to obtain the best results. The overriding goal is to manage the software investment at an optimal level, while operating within the parameters defined by the software publisher's use rights, the SAM standard operating procedures (SOP) defined by the organization, and external governance. Governance includes adherence to U.S. copyright law and due-diligence reporting under the Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Act.
An organization's SAM SOP is determined according to the needs of multiple stakeholders and their respective roles in the software management life cycle. For example, SOP must account for and address needs and requirements in end-user provisioning, contract management, financial management, inventory management, and software reclamation or harvesting practices. While the SOP for each stakeholder or cross-functional area is unique with respect to focal points and methods, each one shares the common goal of managing the organization's software investment at an optimal level.
