Es ist weithin unbestritten, daß Gustav Freytags (1816–1895) Kaufmannsroman "Soll und Haben" eine der schönsten Leistungen in der Reihe realistischer bürgerlicher Zeitromane des 19. Jahrhunderts darstellt. Daß er dennoch nicht mehr gedruckt wird, liegt wohl an dem in den letzten Jahren immer wieder erhobenen Vorwurf, "Soll und Haben" sei antisemitisch.
