How is this book different from other chess books for young children?

It starts as a fairy tale about a king, a dragon, and a young girl with a dream. A young girl is the main character to encourage girls and make it clear that chess is also for them. The history of the game of chess is incorporated as you get acquainted with the characters.

The picture book is very inviting, with plenty of funny and beautiful drawings. There is a lot to discover! For the youngest preschoolers, it is best to tell the story in your own words, but the older preschoolers fully enjoy the rhyming story.

Every chess rule can be found in an attractive drawing. This was an important didactic choice made by the author, like the choice to tell the story in rhyme. Preschoolers love repetition and this is a handy tool when memorizing the chess rules.

About the Author

Christel Minne has been teaching in an elementary school in Bruges for 38 years, including more than 25 years as a kindergarten teacher. After 7 years being a teacher in a traditional school, she decided to switched to the more liberal and methodological way of teaching, by starting at the Freinet school. She thought she could develop her educational skills to much more benefit in a free educational environment rather than being stuck in a traditional one. Improvisation and creativity were the key elements Christel always put first. So, finally, it came as no surprise Christel caught the idea of writing the book(s) that lie(s) in front of you. Her dynamic way of live, and teaching included empowered her to become the inspiring person 'children' need in their younger years. Chess being a handy tool, and that has clearly been proven in her book(s).
