"Jessica Hawkins weaves a tale of forbidden love in epic proportion.."--Corinne Michaels, New York Times Bestselling Author

It was a hot summer day when I met him on the construction site next to my parents' house. Under the sweat and dirt, Manning Sutter was as handsome as the sun was bright. He was older, darker, experienced. I wore a smiley-face t-shirt and had never even been kissed. Yet we saw something in each other that would link us in ways that couldn't be matter how hard we tried.

I loved Manning before I knew the meaning of the word. I was too young, he said. I would wait. Through all the carefully-chosen words hiding what we knew to be true, his struggle to keep me innocent, and infinitely-starry nights--I would wait. But I'd learn that no matter what you achieve in life, it means nothing if you suffer the heartbreak that comes with falling for someone you can never have. Because even though I saw Manning first, that didn't matter. My older sister saw him next.

Book one in a USA TODAY bestselling saga of forbidden love.

What an incredible start to this coming of age story! I was immediately captivated by Lake and Manning and devoured this book! Growing up in the same time period as the story took place in only enhanced my enjoyment and I loved all of the pop culture and music references. I honestly felt like I was right there with Lake back in the 1990's. The writing was beautiful and I experienced so many emotions while reading this book. Jessica Hawkins captured the excitement, anxiety, confusion, and butterflies of falling in love so perfectly. Lake was such an intelligent and mature heroine, but at the same time she was vulnerable and girlish, teetering on the cusp of adulthood. Manning was brooding and dark, but behind the walls and hurt was a man trying to rise above the circumstances of his life. Honestly, all the characters were so genuinely imperfect that you couldn't help but relate to them and root for them to overcome the odds. I don't want to give anything away so please forgive the vagueness and brevity of my review. Just know that this story will take you on an emotional journey you won't soon forget. It is a slow burn romance that will lift your heart one minute and then rip it out of your chest the next. Something in the Way is the first book in a three part series, so please hold onto your hearts and have the tissues ready! *I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this title*

A story about a love at a very, very early ages.

Lake and Manning's story begins and I am left enticed, stunned and craving more. Plan on having your emotions go on a crazy roller coaster ride as this poignant tale brings all the feels that you will be able to handle. This slow simmering romance burns hot and the emotions are deep. It is a story of desire, pain, attraction, angst, heartache, guilt, frustration, tenderness, soulmates, the cruelty of fate and love. These characters are layered and complex. Lake is sweet, smart, loyal and naïve, this means that she embraces her feelings and loves with her whole heart . Manning is a charmer and a genuine good guy that is struggling to do the right thing while a war rages between his heart and his head. A truly remarkable read! This is book one of four and yes, Lake and Manning's journey will pick up and continue in book two.

The story line was flat and uninteresting. Don't waste your time or money.

It is ok. I not that crazy about it. I wish that Lake was 18 or older instead of 16. I also do not like Tiffany, she is a spoiled and lazy girl that wants what others want. It also pissed me off when Manning kissed Tiffany, she is fickle and would leave if she never got her way or someone better came along. I not sure I want to read the second book. Took longer to read this one.

The main character Lake is too young and very annoying. Disappointed in this book.

This book! ? just go ahead and buy them all, cause you won't want to stop reading about Manning & Lake! I'm telling you this series at first seemed a little teenish for my taste but by the 3rd book you do not want it to end!

This story focuses on 16 year old Lake, her sister Tiffany(19, I believe) and 23 year old Manning. I put the ages of the characters because its a huge part of this story as Lake and Manning have a connection that's hard to fight. However, Tiffany and Manning are in a relationship; not committed but together. There are parts in this story where I was thinking Oh No, and then there were parts were I was thinking Hell Yes! In one way, some parts were so wrong but in the same way they seemed oh so right and that's what made me love this story. This book ended with a huge cliffhanger and I'm excited to see what happens next because I was screaming don't do it and in the same breath I was screaming go for it. As wrong as it seems, I know who I want to be together but I want to see how it plays out because I'm thinking just wait a little longer, don't screw this up but it may be too late. The road leads to different paths and life might get in the way.

This poignant and touching love story is not your ordinary romance. It is a forbidden tale about Star-crossed lovers and their epic love for each other. It starts at the beginning when a 16 yr. old Lake Kaplan first meets mysterious and rugged, Manning Sutter. Lake has always done what she is told and still idolizes her father. He wants great things for her, so she is totally focused on achieving those goals. Lakes older sister, Tiffany, is rebellious, wild and carefree. She sees Lake talking to Manning and decides that he will be her next conquest. Manning is a flawed and broken hero who works hard and wants to be better. Something about Lake calls to him and he is torn by his need to protect her and stirrings of feelings he doesn't want to acknowledge. Lake has never thought about love and lust, like her sister, but Manning causes sensations to surface that she doesn't quite know how do handle. She does know that they have a special connection and they grow to genuinely care for each other. But there are those that would not understand their friendship and it is dangerous for both of them. I really cared for all the characters, even tho they would frustrate me at times, they were well developed and honest. The story line was so engaging I couldn't put it down. This is a moving and emotional story of love, redemption, trust, sacrifice, and consequences. It brought out so many extreme emotions and I loved every minute of it! I did not see the twist this would take and it left me stunned! I can't wait for the next book!

10 LOVE/HATE STARS!!! Oh do I start....this is one of the best, most complicated stories I have read in a long time. You will love it and hate it, there is so much emotions and taboo going on you can't put it down. I absolutely love Lake, the 16 year old sister, her young life is prepared for her already. Tiffany her sister is 19 years old, well let's just say spoiled and is completely opposite of Lake. Manning is so dreamy, protective, sexy, bad boy all the way, just perfect. Manning meets Lake and Tiffany and both girls like Manning. I know it is wrong, but I was pulling for Lake to win Manning. This book ends with a cliffhanger, so please bring on the next book.

Oh Jessica Hawkins (hand over heart) you had me at 1993. This was the year I graduated high school. For me these were simpler times. A time before cell phones, caller id or social media. When you waited for the phone to ring on a Friday night and the latest mix tape is the theme to your current range of emotions. Wonderful memories came flooding back of innocent, simpler times of being sixteen. When the smallest gesture or compliment... completely takes over your world. This is a beautiful story about coming of age. Awaking the love we are capable of receiving and wanting to give so freely. Young love and feelings can be so powerful. Little do we know at that age, that it sets the foundation to last a lifetime. Jessica Hawkins has truly outdone herself. A gifted author who is able to put into words what we all think and feel. I will forever adore this book. The title alone has some many wonderful interpretations. I can’t wait for the continuation of this breathtaking series.

4.5 STARS This book was not at ALL was I was expecting! I'm a huge Jessica Hawkins fan and I've read quite a few of her previous books. I'm totally addicted to her signature brand of hot, forbidden and shocking. This certainly has all of those elements, some more than others, but the story is more of a slow burn and buildup to what will happen in the next two books. It is set in the past, in 1993. It had me feeling so old and nostalgic for my own young adult years! I loved all the pop culture references. This first installment of this series I would classify as more young adult or new adult, as the heroine is only 16 years old. Those aren't my favorite genres as I like my heroines a bit older and more mature, but I can't say no to a book from this author. She definitely held my attention by making a little home in my heart for the characters. Her love interest, Manning, is seven years older than Lake. There is that forbidden element. However, there is no sexual relationship between them. The foundation for their relationship is more of a friendship with a side of forbidden sexual tension. Lake is young in body and mind, but she has a maturity beyond her years. Despite that, Manning is a stand up guy with morals and he isn't willing to cross that line. The something in between them is Lake's older and infuriating sister, Tiffany. And the shocking part that I never saw coming? Naturally, that comes at the end with the cliff-hanger. I was left gaping like a fish out of water wondering if it really happened the way I read it! I had to go back and double check. Overall, I prefer my books with more heat, but given Lake and Manning's age difference, I was thankful that line wasn't crossed because I would have lost some respect for Manning.

Wooooo, Ok then. If anyone can do slow burn it is Jessica Hawkins. I have never read one like this before. I completely lost myself in this story. I think there is a pretty strong agreement among readers as to what we want more of. Give us something different; something that makes us think, something that wows us. Well let me tell you this is it. Anytime there is an age difference between characters I'm always curious as to how that storyline was will play out. Lake is 16 which can be tricky. The author did an amazing job at keeping the subject matter in the forbidden, without venturing into the taboo. Lake and Manning's story is set in the early 90's, and while I don't generally like books that aren't in the present tense, it totally worked. Lake is a quiet overachiever who is kind of stuck in the middle area of adulthood and adolescents. She's the exact opposite of her older sister Tiffany, who is a typical carefree so-cal party girl. Lake and Tiffany have an accidental meeting with Manning which leads to a instant friendship between Lake and Manning, it's also instant lust for Tiffany. Manning is this sweet, kinda broody college student who has dreams of doing good for the people around him. It's clear he has a connection with Lake but his conscience is constantly going back and forth between friendly affection or possible romantic feelings for someone who is clearly too young. He's really torn about how he should interact with Lake. Add in Tiffany's blatant advances and it's a tough situation however you go about it. There are these beautiful moments between lake and Manning. You'll find yourself rooting for them to express how they feel, but there is also the hesitation because you know it can end really badly for both of them. Besides a potential love story unfolding, you get this fantastic telling of a girl who is trying to figure out who she is and what she wants. She's falling in love for the first time with someone she can't be with, someone who has caught her sisters eye. If that doesn't twist up your insides I don't know what will. Like she always does, Hawkins blew me away with this story. The conflict was great I can't wait until the second book in this series. 5 stars all the way.

This book.... THIS. BOOK!!! Jessica has basically torn my heart out of my chest and stomped it into the dirt. I am feeling so much emotion right now. I am basically in the first 4, out of 5, stages of grief right now. 1. Denial 2. Anger 3. Bargaining 4. Depression - or heartbreak - whatever you want to call it. I don't know if I can ever get to 5. Acceptance. I can tell you I don't see it in the foreseeable future anyway. Lake Kaplan is 16 and totally under her fathers thumb. She's the good girl whose life revolves around her fathers will for her to go to USC. There is never play time for Lake, she's always studying so she can get into USC. Her sister Tiffany is all about play. She's 19, still living at home and still living off her parents money. Lake meets Manning, the gorgeous but brooding/secretive construction worker working on the house that is being built right next to theirs. A friendship starts from this meeting but between age difference, Tiffany and Lake's father's biasness against the construction worker's/site, Lake and Manning just can't be. Manning is so good and is keeping his distance while staying near Lake at the same time, through Tiffany. Manning sees similarities between his sister and Lake even though he feels differently towards Lake as well, but he knows his boundaries and adheres to them. Then an unthinkable circumstance happens and we're left reeling at the outcome. This story is so filled with emotions that it's hard to comprehend them all until the end. I'm glad this is a first book of 3, but can't wait for the next one either, because things just can't end the way they did in SitW. This is a definite DO NOT MISS book! Jessica called it a slow-burn, but I'm burning up fast at that ending and I need more, NOW! *ARC provided for review

What a kick off to this trilogy. When we meet Lake, she is 16, her sister is 19 and Manning is 23. Manning and Lake have an instant connection to one another, but he knows it's wrong to feel anything for such a young girl. At first it was a protective instinct and then as they got to know each other he started to fall for this young girl, but knew that nothing could ever happen. The only way to see Lake was to date her sister. Lake was never a girl that was into boys, clothes or makeup. She focused on school and doing what her dad wanted her to do. When she met Manning, she felt things she had never felt before. She was jealous of the time he spend with her sister, but understood they could just be friends. This story is a great introduction to these characters and what they mean to each other. The relationships are well laid out and we see all of the cracks and crevices of each of the characters. I fell hard to Manning as he fights himself time and time again and blames himself for something that happened in the past that he can't change. The writing is powerful and had me devouring this book in a day. I loved it. I can't wait to see what's to come! May can't come soon enough!
