Spirits of Light and Shadow by India Drummond

When the most powerful senator in Talmor's second-largest city is cursed with dark magic, the other legislators secretly turn to his estranged son Korbin as a last, desperate chance to find a cure. With the assistance of a refugee schooled in the foreign magic of the One, Korbin seeks to help his father--and find redemption. But an ancient Spirit of Shadow sets the pair in her sights, corrupting their every hope into despair... and turning their quest for a cure into a fight for survival.

About the Author

India knew from age nine that writing would be her passion. Since then she's discovered many more, but none quite so fulfilling as creating a world, a character, or a moment and watching them evolve into something complex and compelling. She has lived in four countries and four American states, is a dual British and American citizen, and is currently back in her hometown where she is writing her next epic fantasy novel.

As a fan of Drummond's Fae series, I eagerly awaited this book and dove into it as soon as I got my hands on it, sure I would find a compelling and gripping story. I was rewarded with characters I grew to care deeply about, an enthralling story line, and a magic system unlike any I'd read before. There were several memorable characters in this story. I'll admit I didn't care for Octavia much in the beginning, but her selflessness and determination warmed me to her. Korbin was my favorite -- the kind of guy I would want as a friend. The interaction between the two was superb. I won't spoil it for you, but you'll see what I mean when you read the story. I highly recommend this book (and all of India Drummond's novels, actually). It stands well on its own, but I'm very much looking forward to the next in the series.
