A 2nd chance at romance teeming with suspense, danger and exciting, action-packed scenes... If he’d forgotten that shy twelve-year-old whose heart he’d broken, well, she’d be happy to remind him. Stroke of Luck heralds the opening salvo in B.J. Daniels’ new Sterling’s Montana series. Teeming with suspense, danger, and exciting, action-packed scenes, this first installment features Will Sterling and Poppy Carmichael. They were childhood friends, but their parting twenty years ago was not pretty. Now, Poppy is out for a reckoning. Most of this story takes place at the Sterling Montana Guest Ranch located just outside Glacier Park in Whitefish, Montana. This is Will’s first year running the Ranch without his father. Will, Garrett and Shade Sterling are the owners now since their father died last year. Against Will’s best judgment, the ranch is opening early for four days to accommodate an insistent request by Big Jack Hanson who was a good friend of Will’s father. Opening early means that the ranch is short-staffed and the unpredictable weather can turn brutal quickly. Since the ranch is off the beaten path, a storm could strand guests, but Big Jack accepts the risks of holding a retreat for some of his employees at the Ranch now. As the tale opens, Dorothea Brand, the Ranch’s housekeeper, sets the tone by insisting that “bad luck always comes in threes.” In her mind, two have already occurred. The Ranch’s cook has been laid up with a broken leg and Will has hired his old childhood friend with a probable grudge against Will to cook. Whatever could be the third? Regardless, the retreat is off to a bad start from the get-go as the unhappy employees are tense, don’t want to be there and don’t like each other. Poppy was a successful, talented businesswoman with stunning green eyes and an assuredness about her. The last time she’d seen Will, she was twelve and he was fifteen. Now he was all man, all cowboy and a confirmed bachelor. This time around, she wants him to want her while she leaves him in her dust and breaks his heart. Will he succumb to her culinary seduction and will it play out as she’s planned? I liked both primary characters, but while I often wish that B.J.’s books would include slightly more romance, the relationship angst herein was repetitive at times and, unfortunately, a tad too much. Also, it seemed incongruous to have a fifty-year-old housekeeper who thought she was a witch and always threatening to put curses on guests smack dab in a western guest Ranch. That said, I still enjoyed the tale. The food in this entry had me salivating. The author even includes some delicious-sounding recipes in the back of the book. If Will brings back his old cook after experiencing Poppy’s cooking, he’s insane. Solving the mystery and keeping everyone alive with a killer or killers on the prowl must be the primary focus even as their second chance at romance stews. As always, Daniels’ writing is sharp and her characters are complex and intriguing. Even though this didn’t end up being one of my favorite B.J. Daniels’ books, it’s still a good story that kept me readily turning the pages. The edition I read included a preview of the next book, Luck of the Draw, which will feature Garrett Sterling’s story. It sounds great and I can’t wait to read it.

When I’m ready for romantic suspense, BJ Daniels is my go to author. Her books are addicting. I can always count on lots of twists, turns, and surprises. She has such a gift for telling heart pounding and adrenaline rushing stories that you just can’t put down. And the evolving romance taking place in the midst of all the danger just makes the whole reading experience more thrilling. BJ Daniels writes the most amazing, complex characters. Even the secondary characters make the story come alive. Poppy and Will made a fabulous team. Though both strong people, they were completely unsure of what they wanted. Poppy had thought making Will hurt as much as she’d been hurt would ease her pain. But Will wasn’t 15 anymore. He was a man. A man who regretted that he’d hurt her and had apologized for his actions. That hurt was getting weaker each day she spent with him and it was making her lose focus. He had grown into a man she could love. Every day Will spent with Poppy made it harder to hide his feelings. And with the danger they were in, he felt helpless and out of control. He knew how he was with women. He got bored. No one ever made him think long term. He didn’t know what he wanted anymore. He just knew he wanted more time with Poppy to figure it out. But as the danger comes right to their door, more time is the one thing Will doesn’t have. The secondary characters were fabulous too. Dorothea was hilarious. A regular Columbo. She added a lot of humor to the story. I loved slowly getting into the secrets of all the guests on the ranch. It seemed everyone was hiding something. Just when I’d think I had figured out whodunit, another guest would start to act suspiciously. It was like watching an Agatha Christie story play out right before my eyes. I was guessing right up until the end. I loved the tension in this story. The tension of the escalating romance with the backdrop of the danger of a killer closing in was exhilarating. No one blends romance, mystery, and danger like BJ Daniels. And. as if the story weren’t enough to get excited about, we also get a sneak peek at brother Garrets story and some of Poppy’s mouthwatering recipes. Fans of BJ Daniels will be thrilled with this newest book. And if you are new to this author, prepare to be delighted.

I received a free, advanced copy of this book from NetGalley.com. This is my unbiased and voluntary review. What started out as a cowboy second chance romance (at twelve years old, leaving in a nearby cabin, while her father worked for the forest service, Poppy Carmichael had fallen in love with the Sterling Montana Guest Ranch, Kate Sterling, who embraced the motherless girl and taught her how to cook and fifteen year old cowboy Will Sterling, who ignored her), escalated into a page turning murder mystery. Years have passed. The three Sterling brothers are now grown, having lost their mother years ago and their father the previous year. Will, the oldest was going to run the guest ranch, while his brothers ran the ranch. This was to be the first year when he was in charge of the guest ranch and things are not starting out well. One of the cabins has a leak in the roof, their cook broke his leg and he had been talked into having guest earlier than they normally do, because the request was from an old friend of their father's. Needing a cook, Garrett, his brother, suggests that he call Poppy, who has returned to town and opened a catering business. Desperate, he calls her, hoping she doesn't still hold a grudge against him. She accepts, planning revenge, having him fall in love with her and her cooking and then breaking his heart. When the guest arrive for a team building long weekend, none of them look happy to be there. As Will and Poppy dance around each other, someone starts to pull dangerous pranks and then there is a murder and a massive snow storm. I was reminded of Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None". Wonderful characters and a riveting plot had me staying up much pasted my bed time, but I knew I would not be able to sleep until I finished it. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

This is a romantic suspense with a blizzard isolating the guests and staff at the Sterling Ranch with a killer amongst them . . . . and a temporary chef who may be vengeful after being scorned by the ranch owner when she was twelve and he was fifteen! I requested and was given a copy of this book, via NetGalley. This is my honest review of the book after choosing to read it. Will Sterling endeavours to ensure his first set of guests have a stay they'll never forget. However, he hadn't anticipated his cook being replaced by Poppy Carmichael, the girl whose heart he'd broken when only a teenager, or that the guests all seem to have problems relating to each other, secrets, antagonisms and more despite all being present on the orders of their mutual boss. When a blizzard traps them all together and someone is murdered, there's no escape, no help and danger all around. Add into all of that the attraction building between Will and Poppy and you've got a great read. Can they survive? Can they discover the motivation for the murder and identify the perpetrator before anyone else is killed? Will Poppy forgive Will and give them both a second chance at romance? The plot has family drama, red herrings, deception, danger and steamy romance in an action packed thriller, with plenty of twists and turns as well as surprises to keep you guessing. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more in this series in future!

Will Sterling and Poppy Carmichael have a history. Poppy had a massive crush on fifteen year old Will when she was a young girl. Like most fifteen year olds, he was only interested in the younger Poppy as a friend. Flash forward twenty years. Will runs his father’s vacation ranch and Poppy has started her own catering business. When Big Jack Hanson, a friend of Will’s father, requests that Will open the ranch before the season begins for a company retreat, he is hesitant, but caves in to the request. With his cook out with a broken leg, Will’s brother Garrett recommends Poppy. She is more than willing to take the job. This will give her the opportunity to get “revenge” on Will as he broke her heart. As the people from On The Fly arrive, Will gets a bad feeling. Soon things begin to happen. There was a reason that Big Jack had these workers, including his two sons, come up for this retreat, Big Jack is determined to find out who is trying to use his company for their own purposes. Once again, BJ Daniels has spun a suspenseful story with many twists and turns. There’s murders, explosions, deceit, and subterfuge. Just when I thought I knew who committed the murders, a wrench was thrown into the works. Along the way, Poppy and Will discover their feelings for each other. There are many interesting characters in this book including Dorothea who constantly complains about all of the bad vibes from this group. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to other books in this series.

Stroke of Luck is more mystery than romance, and there is some decent suspense at its core, but it's a little more cozy mystery-ish than I prefer. I like my mystery with a bit more grit than this one. That said, I did enjoy the suspense more than the romance here. It all hinges on Poppy holding a twenty year grudge over a broken heart. I might've bought it had the elapsed time been shorter or Poppy been older when the said heart breaking occurred, but the fact that she was twelve is just a little too out there for me. There were also a few turns of phrase that just didn't mesh with a rugged cowboy and only served to pull me out of the story. I do think many will find this one more enjoyable than I did, but all in all, it just wasn't my cup of tea.

"Stroke of Luck" is a romantic suspense/mystery that begins with a cooking revenge. Will has recently taken over his family's ranch lodge/retreat, and although they do not usually open it so early in the year because of potential winter storms, he is hosting his first group. When his cook breaks his arm and is out of commission, he is desperate for a replacement. When he hears that Poppy- a blast from the past- might be available as she has her own catering company, he decides to hire her. Poppy was 12 when Will was 15 and they met on the ranch. She had an enormous crush on him, and he let her down hard. She's never quite gotten over that first love, and so when she gets the invitation, she is happy to go and try to win his heart through his stomach- then she can break his heart the way he broke hers. However, once they see each other again, nothing is so simple as it seemed. Lamar is running the company, but his father, Big Jack, hasn't quite given over the helm. Big Jack called for this retreat last minute and has made most of the activities mandatory. The group does not really get along well, and trouble is certain. However, most of them would not have expected the way things escalate after a late winter storm prevents anyone from being able to leave. As Lamar begins to dig deeper into why his father mandated this retreat- and the things about the company he hadn't seen- it becomes entangled with an even bigger plot that leaves many of the guests and staff scared for their lives. Told from several perspectives, this story was very engaging and kept me guessing. I had some hunches- some of which ended up checking out- but there were plenty of twists and turns along the way to make this a really fun read. As the suspense builds, this became a really fast-paced read. The first parts were a little slow with building up Will/Poppy's relationship, which seemed glacial until it was sped up pretty fast. I would have liked a steadier build and less push/pull, so I could really get a good handle on them as a couple. The strongest parts of the book were the mystery and investigations. The setting was perfect, and the suspense built nicely. While I would have liked a stronger romance element, this was still a really intriguing read, and I liked solving the mysteries. Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

This is the first book I have read of B.J.Daniels and didn’t know what to expect, I admit I fell in love with cover and the blurb. So I was expecting a cowboy romance, but this was so much more. We have Poppy who has come back to Whitefish Montana to start her catering business. Will runs the Guest Ranch Retreat, and its his first year and they have opened early for special client. A four day work retreat, what could go wrong. The cook has broken his leg, and Will’s brother Garrett recommends Poppy Carmichael. Poppy and Will know each other from when they kids and hadn’t parted well. So we have employees who don’t won’t to be there, Poppy is determined to get back at Will. Then there Dorothea who has lived on the Sterling Ranch as a housekeeper walking around saying there is something bad going to happen. That’s just the beginning, and this book kept me gripped until the end I did not want to miss anything. It was well worth the read and I want to go back to Sterling Ranch for another adventure. This had it all, a handsome cowboy, love, murder and mayhem and right up my street. It is told in multiple povs so you get a real feel for whats going on. I’m hooked on B.J.Daniels, so go and read it yourself.
