He spent more than a thousand years imprisoned in Hell...

Drake is an ancient dragon shifter, one of the most powerful beings in existence, but over a millennium trapped in utter darkness has left him ill-equipped for modern society. If it wasn't for Victoria, the sweet female brave enough to befriend him, he'd be lost. She's smart and gorgeous and everything he never dared dream of during his years of agonizing loneliness. He may not have anything to offer her, but one thing he knows for sure: he'd die to keep her safe.

Only to fall into the heaven of her touch.

Victoria is a wolf shifter, healer of the Stavros pack. She's seen a lot, but she's never met anybody quite like Drake, the fiery, fascinating shifter who can blaze through the skies unseen by mere mortals. He's lost, dangerous, and the last male she should fall in love with, but the more time she spends helping him navigate modern life, the deeper--and hotter--their connection becomes. She's thrilled when they finally locate his family, but reuniting with his people plunges them both into unimaginable danger. It's a race against the clock trying to figure out who wants them dead and who they can trust, especially when the threat is closer than they ever imagined.

I was looking forward to Drake's story and learning more about him. There were twists and turns and was left guessing to the end who the villain. I liked how Drake and Victoria got to experience certain things for the first time together. Drake was protective, intense, powerful and wanting to better himself for Victoria and didn't give up. Victoria was sweet but we also see times where she takes a stand and helpful as well as understanding things Drake was made to do. I cant wait to see which characters are in the next book :)

Drake is an ancient dragon shifter, one of the most powerful beings in existence, but over a millennium trapped in utter darkness has left him ill-equipped for modern society. If it wasn’t for Victoria, the sweet female brave enough to befriend him, he’d be lost. She’s smart and gorgeous and everything he never dared dream of during his years of agonizing loneliness. He may not have anything to offer her, but one thing he knows for sure: he’d die to keep her safe. This was a great story. I recently got it after having read several of the more recent books in this series that I absolutely loved. It was definitely interesting seeing characters from a different standpoint from where I’ve already read them. I really loved getting to know Drake and Victoria. I loved following Drake as he learned more about himself. I just really loved this story. I can’t wait to read the rest from this series. I highly recommend. **I voluntarily read and reviewed this book

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!! ***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!! I bought this book back in 2015, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book! I own this whole series and many other books by Katie Reus! The cover is very subdued, and you would know it is paranormal except for the small dragon that gives you a hint. This is Drake and Victoria’s story!! There is some excitement when Drake’s brother and sister show up as well as other dragons that are flying near the pack land. Drake and Victoria take a trip to learn more about Dragons, but they are followed. All sorts of trouble and mysterious attacks, and the danger of not knowing who sent Drake to Hell. This was another action-packed book! I loved reading this book too! Katie has created an awesome mixed paranormal world full of intrigue and danger that pulls you right into the stories! I can’t wait to read more!! I highly recommend to any paranormal fans who love action galore, mystery, battles, and all sorts of paranormals!

Katie Reus has quickly become one of my favorite authors. She is a brilliant storyteller.....Drake & Victoria's story was everything I hoped it would be. I have a hard time putting Katie's books down once I have started one and Taste Of Darkness was no exception. If you love paranormal romance you will love this series, and you will love Katie Reus! I can not wait for the next book!

Even though this storyline focuses on two different characters from the last book, you really need to read them in succession. When I started reading this one I felt like I was missing something. The characters seemed way too familiar with each other and there seemed to be some time gap in what was going on for the book to just be starting. So I reread the ending from Darkness Awakened and refreshed my memory of how these two characters met. Then afterwards I was able to jump right in the story with no problem. Drake was a very interesting character. Yeah, he’s all macho Alpha, he is a dragon after all, but he’s way out of his element in the modern world and leans on Victoria and others for help when it comes to the unknown, like driving. You see, when Drake was a little boy he was sacrificed and sent to the depths of hell where he spent over a thousand years trying to survive. That is, until he escapes and finds himself protected by the Stavros wolf pack. So imagine everything that’s changed in the last thousand years. It’s pretty safe to say that Drake has a lot to learn about the new world. He grew up in hell and doesn’t really have the lifetime experience in dealing with people. So he tends to be a bit gruff when interacting with others. He also has no memory of who he was before his time in Hell. So over time, little things trigger his memory, slowly revealing who he was as well as snippets of his gruesome time in Hell. I do have a couple of complains and one was ironically Drake himself. I felt that for someone who hadn’t grown up in the modern world, he sure did acclimate fast. For instance, my mom has had a cellphone for almost 10 years now. That woman just learned how to text. When she came out to visit a few months back she tried telling me that her phone only came with one ringtone, the carriers signature tune. Knowing that wasn’t right I, within seconds, changed her ringtone to some obnoxious DJ BLAST tune. It took her a couple of weeks to figure out how to get rid of it, and I think she even enlisted the help of someone. So considering that Drake’s only been in our world for four months, I’m not buying that he’s able to pick up on our technology so fast. Maybe had I seen the transition period in those first 4 months that would’ve been different, but we are presented with the Drake who’s been around for 4 months and I wasn’t a fan of the fact that homeboy was texting like it’s cool. My other issue was that I felt like there were way too many POV’s going on. I’m totally fine with getting a couple extra POV’s mixed in pertaining to either the villain or upcoming highlighted characters but this one was all over the place. I honestly don’t know who the next book will be about because there was just so many things going on at once. I would have liked it to focus a bit more on the main characters and their story and not try to branch out twenty different ways. Since Drake was sent to Hell as a little boy, he was never told about the birds and the bees. Let alone did anything with a female. Victoria’s been coddled and babied since she was adopted into the pack. So she never really had the opportunity to date. So the fact that these two were starting out on equal ground was pretty interesting. It’s not too often that you have two older characters who are both virgins. It was a nice change of pace. The romance isn’t the only thing this book has to offer. There are some pretty awesome fight scenes as well. Since whoever put Drake in hell is still out there, there are some moments where things get a little bloody. You have to figure that Dragons don’t fight with fists or weapons. So there are a lot of scenes where Drake chomps onto a neck and rips the head from the body or incinerates the person with his fire breath. That may be a turn off to some, but he’s a dragon. If he went around throwing glitter on everyone it wouldn’t be very threatening. And dragons are huge threatening creatures that would make Godzilla pee in his non-existent reptilian pants. In the end, this is a great paranormal romance series. I’ve loved just about every book of Katie’s that I’ve read. This one started out strong for me but once everyone started butting in with their POV’s I got a little distracted and lost sight of the story at hand. It was still highly enjoyable though. I will definitely be waiting for the next book to come out.

4.5 stars-TASTE OF DARKNESS is the second instalment in Katie Reus’s adult, contemporary DARKNESS paranormal romance series. This is dragon shifter Drake and wolf shifter/healer Victoria’s storyline. We were first introduced to Victoria and Drake in Darkness Awakened where Drake was revealed asVega’s protector in Hell. Although TASTE OF DARKNESS is the second book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone. Drake is a dragon shifter who has spent over one thousand years in Hell. Captured and tortured as a young boy Drake has no memory of the years before his imprisonment. He has no recollection of family, friends or how he ended up trapped with no way of escape. Following his rescue, along side Vega, Drake finds himself attracted to one of his rescuers –a wolf shifter from the Stavros pack named Victoria and the woman who would one day be his mate.  Drake is a dragon who has spent over a millennia in Hell and is unaware of what it is like to be a dragon with a mate. While he worries about the rituals of courtship and claiming, someone else is desperately trying to destroy Drake’s happiness –one dragon/one wolf at a time. As Drake and his new found family begin to research the history of the dragon, Victoria will find herself the object of another’s obsession. The relationship between Drake and Victoria is sensual, seductive and slow to build as Drake is unsure of himself in the relationship department. He is a man who believes he is not worthy of a mate and must prove that he is a capable male of providing and protecting the woman that he loves.  We are introduced to a number of secondary characters including Drake’s siblings, extended family and a host of enemy clans who are all vying for control. With the introduction of several new dragons, there appears to be several potential matings on the horizon. Katie Reus adds another imaginative and intense storyline to her repertoire of romantic paranormal novels.  TASTE OF DARKNESS takes the reader on a passionate journey, a captivating love story, and an entertaining view of life as a paranormal shifter.

Oh, wow, this was a fantastic book. I loved the ebbs and flows of the "who sent him to Hell" issue. The romance built up believably and I liked the idea that they'd been friends for months without letting on they were each attracted to the other. And...of course...DRAGON SHIFTERS! I love the notion. And the world-building was really good too. Book provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Taste of Darkness by Katie Reus is my first Dragon shifter book. I wasn't sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. Katie always takes me on a rush of action and adventure as well as steamy passion in her books and this one was no different. In Taste of Darkness, Drake, a Dragon shifter, is still figuring out the human world after being imprisoned in hell for thousands of years with Demons and the like. He has found his mate in Victoria, a wolf shifter, who is helping him along the way. Her pack took him in and consider him family now. One other issue for Drake is that he doesn't remember much of anything before he was sacrificed at the age of 12. So, trust is hard for him. Even when his brother and sister come looking for him. The book started a little slow for me. I don't know if it was that I wasn't in the right frame of mind to read a paranormal (which can sometimes happen) or not. I believe in Katie's work so I kept going and was glad I did. The story picked up significantly and I found it to be full of mystery, suspense, family and romantic love. I thought it was fantastic how Katie drew out the romance between Drake and Victoria. Both of them are quite new at love and any physical intimacy and even though they knew in their heart and soul they were meant for each other, they still took things slow. Drake wanted to do right by Victoria. And he did. The ending was perfect. Overall, Taste of Darkness is a good book if you like paranormal romance. Katie does a fantastic job with her characters, developing them well and coming up with great stories that are not all the same. She easily weaves in subtle plot lines that will take you into the next book in the series. If you like paranormal romance, I recommend you give Taste of Darkness a try! *I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.*

This was my first dragon shifter book and couldn't have chosen a better book. Katie did an amazing job and with the paranormal/fantasy aspect of the story. So much so that that it kept me reading until very late hours in the morning (I was so engrossed in the story that I didn't even notice the time passing by that quickly).  This is the second installment of the series. Here we meet Drake our tortured hero that's spent several hundreds of years literally trapped in Hell and is now trying to adjust to this new-to-him world and enlists the help of charismatic wolf shifter Victoria to get better at it.  Now, admittedly, the story is a trope I'm not too fond of, which is friends to lovers. I feel there is already a connection and there is no obstacle to overcome so there is no build up. In this case, there is a little bit of tension between them because Drake has been away for too long and doesn't know what he's doing for one, and secondly, he feels he may not be worthy of her love. I liked that about their love story, but again, it's not my favorite trope. I loved the suspense side of the story. You keep hearing glimpses of the past and of the villain but only very subtle, kind of just giving you clues of what was to come. She was giving me clues to decipher the riddle and find out who was the real villain and before the actual character did. At the same time, she kept throwing new characters and I kept wondering who was the monster of the story. And although I did figure out who the culprit of all of Drake's misery was, it did not take away the enjoyment of the book one bit. I wish I could say more but I feel if I do I could fall into spoiler territory. I will continue the series since I have a feeling there will be more coming. Too many awesome characters, dragons and otherwise that I definitely want to know more of.  *I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*

"Growl all you want. The sound is...appealing."  TASTE OF DARKNESS by Katie Reus is an incredible paranormal urban fantasy romance and I loved it! It's the second novel in Katie's Darkness series and there are interconnected characters, but it can be fully enjoyed as a standalone; That's the way I read it. I was drawn into the tale right away. As the story opens, Drake, a dragon shifter, is learning to drive a car under the tutelage of Victoria, a wolf shifter. LOL! “Always strap in. As supernatural beings we're pretty much going to survive any crash, especially you, but the police are more likely to pull you over if you're not strapped in." "I'm certain they could pull you over for many other infractions," he murmured, doing as she instructed with the seatbelt.” ... “I've seen you burn trained vampires to a crisp and swat supernatural beings away with your wings as if they were insects bothering you, and my driving is terrifying?" "Well it's not good.”  My full review has been posted to Reading Between the Wines Book Club.

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4 1/2 REVIEW:  Taste of Darkness picks up a few months after the end of Darkness Awakened (bk1). Drake is out of Hell and trying to figure out his place in the world. He may not have much in the way of money or experience in this new world, but one thing Drake does know is that he will do everything to be the man that Victoria needs. But as Drake tries to navigate this new world the past comes back to bite him in the butt This was a great follow up to Darkness Awakened. I knew from the minute the Drake blasted on to the pages that he would be a very important person in this world. And I was right. Drake’s reappearance into the world really up roots the world. And brings in a whole bunch of new characters that I can’t wait to read about. Drake and Victoria are just to cute together. I loved the Drake is trying so hard to be who he thinks Victoria wants. Yet Victoria keeps telling him that all she wants is Drake, just the way he is. I hope that Ms. Reus will revisit these two soon.  Disclaimer:  I received a complimentary copy of the book from Katie Reus in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.
