About the Author

Recognized as a transformational leader in education, Jennifer Williams (@JenWilliamsEdu) has dedicated herself to the field of education for more than 20 years through her roles as a professor, school administrator, literacy specialist and classroom teacher. In her current work as the co-founder and director of outreach and community for the nonprofit organization Take Action Global (@TakeActionEdu), Williams helps build schools in refugee camps and in remote areas of Africa, Asia and South America, and supports global school programs to empower students and teachers to take action on social good. She’s also the co-founder of TeachSDGs, the United Nations-appointed organization that has connected more than 30,000 international educators to the Sustainable Development Goals. Williams is a professor at Saint Leo University in both the College of Education and the College of Graduate Education where she champions teachers, preservice teachers and students to prepare for their futures in a world that will prioritize ingenuity, innovation and exploration. Williams writes for Edutopia, Education Week and the International Literacy Association, and is the co-founder of Edcamp Tampa Bay and Edcamp Literacy. She’s a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert, a Kahoot! Founding Ambassador, a Nearpod PioNear and a Squirrels Alpha Squirrel. In 2016, Williams was named No. 33 of the 200 Top Education Influencers. In 2017, she was named No. 13 of the Top Women Edtech Influencers by Onalytica, based on her work in education and educational technology.
Jennifer Williams is a professor at Saint Leo University in St. Leo, Florida, and serves on the board of directors for the International Literacy Association. Over the past two decades, she’s held roles as a school administrator, literacy specialist and classroom teacher. She’s the co-founder and lead program developer for Calliope Global, and a lead educator on the United Nations Global Goals Educator Task Force, examining the role of the sustainable development goals in education. In her role as director of education strategy at Participate, she champions teachers, preservice teachers and students to prepare for their futures in a world that will prioritize creativity, innovation and exploration.

This inclusive, inspiring title invites readers to reflect on the intersections of pedagogy, educational technology, and global citizenship, as well as to take action, both in and out of the classroom. In the opening chapter, Williams (director, Take Action Global) anchors her work in the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Sustainable Development Goals and advocates for readers to do the same; she also provides an overview of several recommended instructional design frameworks and related activities. The remaining five chapters address prioritizing instructional time, optimizing learning environments to support students, relying on digital storytelling tools to amplify student voices, building partnerships with educational technology developers, and pursuing meaningful professional development. Williams suggests a variety of tech tools and offers practical ideas for using them in instructional spaces, with a consistent focus on centering and empowering students, connecting with others, building empathy, and creating change for the global good. She also emphasizes inquiry-based learning, activism, and digital citizenship, and incorporates vignettes, student work and project samples, and interviews with educators from around the world to illustrate the possibilities. Each chapter concludes with three prompts to encourage readers to synthesize and apply new learning, reflect on current practices, and develop concrete plans for growth.
