This is not just a `who done it' but also a wonderful picture of ex pat life in Cyprus. Ms Mortimer brings all her ex-pat characters alive with a sure touch and a deft stroke of the pen. But she doesn't just stop there. She also gives us an insight into the Cypriots as well. Their way of thinking as well as their way of life. Her characterisation is the reason this book works so well. It is so well written, the book is an easy read, as not one word is out of place or unnecessary. A tour de force of the `Who done it' mystery genre. I can easily recommend this book. It's murder mystery and even cozy mystery. Great read

This is a wonderful whodunit that will keep you enthralled throughout. The setting is Cyprus, where the author lives, and her intimate knowledge of the place shines through. The story is worthy of Agatha Christie as the clues pile up and the mystery is solved in a most satisfying way. Highly recommended.

For those of us who don't remember Shakespeare's Macbeth--here are the Sparknotes (free to read) and just in case I just had to look up Antigone as well (here are the Sparknotes (free to read). Although I did read both of these many times growing up--I simply could not remember. At the start of each chapter is a quote from Macbeth--and one of the main characters was named Antigone--for very good reason as it turns out! This novel set in a very small village in Cyprus where time has stood still. Men still lorded it over the women and could beat them, etc at will. Most of the young people had left this village for larger towns and it was now occupied mostly by ex-patriots (of Britain) and Cyprians. As with any small village secrets were rampant as well as gossips and nosy bodies! When a much hated man was found murdered by Diana Rivers and her husband--they become embroiled in trying to figure out who really did it--then another is found-an apparent suicide. The twists and turns will keep you guessing--the ending will astound you! The surrounding country side is described so that you will feel that you are there. This is not the first Diana Rivers mystery I have read. I have also read others in her Dark Minds series. I absolutely love this author and highly suggest you start reading one or more of her books NOW!

Good book to read if you are an insomniac. Though subtitled a mystery and suspense thriller, I just could not get into The Assassins' Village by Faith Mortimer. If you are a fan of the author's writing, you might appreciate this tale. I found it dull and the characters flat. After reading more than 15% of the book, I gave up trying to find its redeeming value.
